Uzun kanatları, uzun gagaları, bacakları ve küçük ayakları vardır.
Erkeklerinin başı ile vücudu arasında kırmızı renkli bir kese bulunmaktadır.
Daha çok bataklıkda yaşarlar.
Pelikanlar'la akraba olmakla beraber, vücutlarının uçuş tarzlarına uymasından ötürü bambaşka bir görünüşleri vardır.
Kuyrukları çatallıdır.
