How I Made An Egg (Motor)

in #paragliding7 years ago (edited)

Hello Folks,
I was scouring yet again through the files on my computer and I found a folder containing images of the cage build of the Re-drive GX200 Eggmotor. I've touched upon this in a previous post but I want to go a little more in depth to the process.

[I was planning on using a 130cm diameter propeller and so I rolled the prop cage (16mm stainless tube) to around 140cm diameter.]

[I tack welded the circle together temporarily]

[I set the hub of the reduction drive unit directly in the center and checked with a spirit level]

[Once I had quickly tack welded the bulk of the chassis together I test fitted the central section mount/engine]

[I could then add the strengthening beams while all was 'square']

[I then had the chassis welded by a professional (one of Sam's work colleagues), the finish was very good.]

[I next fitted the central section (minus engine) to check all was good after the pro-welding]

[I marked up the cage halves (top and bottom) to drill for spring clip fitting]

[Total weight of the bare chassis was 5.5kg]

[All the bits were re-attached along with a small test fuel tank]

She was now all set for thrust testing and hang-testing in readiness for a flight.

Although I've added this clip before in an old post, here is this machine in flight :)
[Note: the small test fuel tank has been replaced with a green 5 litre one]

I certainly hope you enjoyed this post.

Many thanks,
Rob.

Nicely done brother. That's pretty dang awesome. 😀

Cheers my friend....... I do miss the 'old days' lol.

I miss them too sometimes. Haha.

Wow! You just blew my mind. How long have you been welding? I definitely want to learn. Any recommendations?

My father-in-law (Sam) was a pro welder/erector and so I learnt off him. My skills are pretty dire though...... even after building several Eggs since 2008. I only tacked this one together and got one of Sams work mates to finish it off as it was stainless steel and not the usual mild steel that I work with. I can't really recommend anything really................. perhaps all I can say is take your time and keep doing it in short bursts so not to blow holes in the steel. Cheers :)

Right on. Did you start with TIG welding?

I think I still had the old stick (arc) welder at the time. I've since bought a gasless MIG.

Very cool. Welding and woodworking are on my bucket list!

Great to hear, I love working with my hands :)

Must...Get...a...paramotor...

Don't build one matey, it's a 'right ball-ache' lol.
