A few days ago, I received this email. When I was a child, I was a prolific reader. I had hoped that I would write a book and have it published when I was young, but I never developed the push to achieve that goal. Some of you might know that I wrote about one million words within two years here on Steemit.com. I doubt if there is anything, that anyone will remember me by on here.

I have an attitude that there is only one thing preventing oneself from reaching one's ambitions. The only important thing between you and your dreams is YOU. Consequently I decided to take them up on the invitation.

Preparation

First of all, I have never seen a "pitch" much less written one. I learned an ordinary pitch would be a document set up in such a way, that the characters are fleshed out and the reviewer of the pitch are confident that there is a roadmap for the episodes. I tracked down the pitch for the tv series New Girl. The plot for the full series can be found here

Plot

Jessica "Jess" Day (Zooey Deschanel) is a bubbly and quirky teacher in her early 30s who comes home to find her boyfriend, Spencer, with another woman and leaves him immediately to look for elsewhere to live. After answering an ad for a new roommate on Craigslist, she finds herself moving into a loft in Los Angeles with three men around her own age: Nick, Schmidt, and Coach. After the pilot episode, Winston, a former roommate and Nick's childhood friend, replaces Coach, who had vacated the apartment to live with his girlfriend. Cece, Jess's childhood best friend and a successful fashion model, frequently visits Jess and the guys.

The series follows the group's amusing interactions with each other as they become closer friends, and their romantic relationships. Midway through season 1, Schmidt and Cece get involved in a mostly sexual relationship but break up at the end of the season. In Season 2, Jess is laid off from her teaching job; she and the others get involved in mostly temporary relationships, although Cece enters an arranged marriage engagement to Shivrang (Satya Bhabha) that is broken up at their wedding in the season 2 finale. Jess and Nick become romantically attracted to each other, making their relationship official at the end of season 2, and it lasts through most of season 3. Coach returns to the loft in season 3 after revealing that he had broken up with his girlfriend and stays through season 4 where he moves out to be with another girl, May (Meaghan Rath). After bouncing around several random jobs, Winston works to become a police officer with the LAPD, and falls in love with his partner Aly. At the end of season 4, Schmidt proposes to Cece, and they marry at the end of season 5. Also, in season 5, while Jess is on jury duty, the group brings in temporary roommate Reagan Lucas (Megan Fox), whom Nick becomes interested in. In season 6, Schmidt and Cece buy a house together that they have to remodel, living with the gang in the meantime. Season 7 advances the storyline three years later where Schmidt and Cece have a three-year-old daughter named Ruth, Winston and Aly are expecting their first baby, and Nick proposes to Jess.

The second step if the initial pitch has favourable interest is to create a "Bible" for the series. Here are the Bibles for the series Stranger Things and Poltergeist - The Legacy.

One of my favourite movies is My Man Godfrey. While I normally object to reimagining characters, I believe that the story could be introduced to a new generation with the addition of new characters that would be supplement the original story. If the original story was laid out like curtain rings, the additional story arcs would be like the current. Keep the original story faithful to the original story and create new storylines to reflect modern sensibilities. Unlike most pitches, the competition is limited to only 350 words. It is a challenge to pare the concepts down to a minimum.

One of the elements of the pitch is to create a tagline. In my case, I borrowed part of the tagline of the original movie and arrived at the following tagline:

I describe it as an initial pitch, because in addition to the registration fee to join the competition (they do need to make money), this organization provides an editing service to make recommendations on how to improve success rate. I will see at the end of five days how many changes I will need to make and from there I will be able to make my final submission.
