I know that this is brand new... but so am I, so there's that

but I'm into having a bit a of fun with you, and I wanna win your first contest...

Carved this little guy out of a cherry tree for a friend of mine. Hope y'all dig it :) !

(I think it fits your criteria... seems about as original as it could get)

but I'm not too sure how to submit exactly

anyways, enjoy!

Yes that is original, you can see how to enter in this post: Weekly woodworking post competition ,
you can read the post here

The competition and the Curation are a separate thing. You can enter the competition and the Woodworkcurators seal of approval is awarded for good posts. The post is then resteemed.

Thanks

That is a lovely piece. I really like the contrast from the bark to the sapwood to the heartwood. Is it cherry? I am curious about how you made it. I guess you used a chainsaw, right, but how did you get the smooth curves? I would love to see some video of that process. To enter the competition you need to resteem and upvote the competition announcement post on @jist ‘s blog. Good luck!

the sapwood is gorgeous! I love to play with that line when making things. I think it's a black cherry. I save a lot of wood from the firewood pile, which is a really cool concept to think about.

Most of the wood comes off with the chainsaw... I kind of move the saw sideways on the surface to sort of brush in the curves. The most important consideration with stuff like this is to remove the center of the tree wherever possible. I can get the saw marks off with an angle grinder (ceramic flap disc) and smooth it down with a 6in random orbital sander. Sometimes I use a mouse sander to get in the tight spots, but they don't seem to hold up too well... So I try to design stuff with the ability of the tools in mind. I used a hole cutting saw type bit and a big ole drill to get the holes.

Originally, it was supposed to hold two glasses, but as I was cutting the slits (for the stem to go through) one of them snapped, so I turned it into a hook

Thank you for your support :)

thank you! More where that came from

impressive, and unique, I have made a few in my day but not as nice as this is. Excellent

thank you :) My first few cup holders were not nearly this good. I wanna say this is my 6th or something?

I say keep at it! Everyone needs a good place to put down their beer and such (separates us from the apes lol)
