"Ithaqa" Comic Book Update #228 - The Kiss! Also Editor Advice
So today I sent off the Issue 6 script to my editor for the first time. It wasn't fully finished, I only had 29 out of 32 (or 36) pages accounted for. Mostly those missing pages will probably go towards the bookend section. Some of the scenes I really like so far, and a few are even lifted from the pre "remix" scripts.
I'll be curious to see what Lisa likes, and what she doesn't. I don't have a strong sense as to if there's anything I want to cut from this issue, but I often get a little too close to a scene to be objective on whether or not it should be nixed. As always, I can not overstate the importance of finding yourself an editor, and even if it's only 20 bucks, PAY THEM!!
Now I happen to think people deserve to be paid for their labor, simply as a moral issue, but I'm here to tell you that as a creative, paying your editor is in your own SELFISH interest as well. When I was in college, and then early when writing "Ithaqa," my "editors" were friends who I asked to read the script.
They were people whose opinions I respected, and whose advice had been helpful in the past, but I kept running into a problem, they were in no way obligated to give me feedback, let alone feedback in a timely manner!
When you decide to pay your editor, the exchange goes from charity, to a serious transaction. Now your editor sees this as a real obligation, as a job, as a service they have to deliver on. If you're serious about your work, if you're serious about finishing it in anything approaching a timely manner, do not rely on charity to get meaningful advice. Find someone you trust and pay them!! Lisa has been a great friend to me for years, she is not a professional editor, and I couldn't be luckier to be paying her on a per issue basis for this comic.
