Capsule Film Review: Allied (2016)

in #film7 years ago

In 2016 Robert Zemeckis paid homage to Classic Hollywood melodramas and spy thrillers with WW2-themed film Allied. The plot begins in 1942 when Max Vattan (played by Brad Pitt), Canadian working for British Special Operations Executive gets parachuted in Morroco, then under control of Vichy France. His task is to assassinate top German official and he is assisted by Marianne Beausejour (played by Marion Cottilard), member of local resistance who is pretending to be his wife. Two of them actually fall in love, and after successful mission come to Britain where they marry and have daughter. Vattan’s superiors, on the other hand, begin to suspect that Marianne isn’t who she claims to be. Allied failed despite huge budget, major stars and strong PR, and this is mostly due to structural issues. It works as two films stitched into one – first part, which takes place in exotic setting, is superb action thriller, while the second, which takes part in dour rainy and bombed-out England, is rather simple and predictable "whodunnit".
