Kurt Cobain would have been 50 today. His music mattered.

My daughter takes online math tutoring and her instructor sounds just like Kurt Cobain. Unless the late Nirvana singer cheated death and found a second career teaching kids about fractions, it’s not him. The math guy’s name is Duane and he has a beard with a shaved head, but his speaking voice sounds exactly like Kurt Cobain’s.

I should pay Duane an extra $50 to see if he can sing a line of Lithium.

Instead, I hopped on the Internet to be reminded that today was Cobain’s birthday. The Nirvana lead singer would have been 50 today if he had lived. His life was cut tragically short by his suicide at age 27 in 1994, meaning that the world has been without him for almost as long as he lived.

Nirvana produced only 102 songs. As Cobain once explained, "I wanted to be totally Led Zeppelin in a way and then be totally extreme punk rock and then do real wimpy pop songs". He achieved those things and pioneered a whole new sound in such a short time. How many more songs would Cobain have sung if he had lived longer? Bands like the Rolling Stones, AC/DC, and Aerosmith started much earlier, but have kept on ticking. They look like zombies, but they haven’t stopped making music.

If Cobain had lived, would he have taken the band in a different direction? Would he have resisted the urge to go pop? Would he have wasted away on heroin? Would he and Courtney Love have stayed together? Would he have lived to see his daughter become a noted model and visual artist? Would Nirvana have stayed together for more than a few years? Would bandmate Dave Grohl ever have gone out on his own and formed the Foo Fighters?

It was better to burn out than to fade away, so we’ll never know. I was watching MTV in 1994 when they announced his death. While I always liked Nirvana’s music, I never truly appreciated Cobain’s impact on American music until after his death. All of the tributes and retrospectives for the next few days made that quite clear. Before Cobain, it had been many years since someone from such a modest background (he had been homeless at one point) had succeeded in music on their own terms (bursting out of the Seattle music scene rather than having to go through the recording industry's machinery in LA or New York).

The next few years made it even clearer. Nirvana had busted the grunge door wide open for others like Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, and Pearl Jam. These bands were contemporaries, and some started earlier than Nirvana did, but after Nirvana’s success, each one of them (and several others) became household names on the music scene.

After the 90’s, I moved on from the Seattle sound, which seemed like a dead end after a while. But as I’ve grown older, I’ve begun listening to more grunge music again. In 2010, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked Nirvana as # 30 on its list of history’s most influential bands, so I’m not the only one who remembers. Most of all, Kurt Cobain was real, and perhaps he knew that would have been difficult to sustain. His songs will always hold a place in the music of my life.

Here is one of his best, the MTV Unplugged version of Come As You Are. Enjoy.

Did you know that "Tearjerker" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers was written about Kurt Cobain?

I always figured that it was, but finally took the time to confirm that today, aftre two decades of just assuming.

Even though I wasn't born at Nirvana's peak, I really like many of their songs, specially "You know you're right", a very good classy band ;)
Nevertheless I like Foo fighters more than Nirvana, despite all the influential power Nirvana had at the time, Foo Fighters is more for me.
Pretty good post mate!

Their unplugged was incredible.

I used to listen to a lot of Nirvana, my favorite band back in the day. I even incorporated a shield with a K in the middle into my first tattoo, which I got on my left arm. Kurt had the K Records logo (shield with a K in it) tattooed on his left arm.

Thanks for the memories Tom!

I remember when "never mind" came out, it was HUGE, was very popular in the clubs! ...used to be a big fan!

Yes, that was enormous. Those songs were everywhere for a while.

What a beautiful tribute to a life that did matter in deed, not only turned many heads but brought forth a way of looking at the world we live in today under its pretence, as you said bursted open the door of possibility for so many other bands that hd not quite made it yet and rose to the top of many charts...

Thanks you for sharing such passion with us, the quality of this article is a real statement of gratitude. All for one and one for all. Namaste :)

Short but sweet. Thanks for the great comment!

He was too influential so they killed him, sad world we live in. He's a legend though.

Well, that's one theory! It's certainly happened to others who were too influential.

Personally I believe it was more likely to be Courtney being greedy and into drugs and killed him or had him killed. But look at people like Tupac, Snowden, etc the govt definitely doesn't like influential people they have no control of.

That's for sure. A lot of people who have challenged the system have been taken too soon.

I'm so happy you ended with a song from unplugged. That was one of the greatest shows ever. Their performance on that show showed so much about them. Nirvana will always remind me of some of the most fun times I had in college. I know he grew to hate "Smells Like Teen Spirit" but I will never forget hearing it at every house as we hopped from party to party. It is now on my son's playlist. Their songs have truly aged well.

Yes, they have. That Unplugged concert showed a completely different side of them than most of us had heard before. There sure were some epic performances in that series, but Nirvana's was right up there.

I know you aren't a big rap guy but LL Cool J's "Mamma Said Knock You Out" unplugged is one of my favorites.

I LOVE Lauryn Hill's unplugged myself...

RIP Kurt Cobain

I really think I would have watched any artist on this show. There was something so special about seeing them perform in such vulnerable way.

LL was pretty cool. I lost track of him for about 20 years, but he somehow became popular again, too.

That's a pretty good song from the Past!

He was an interesting musician with a destinctive style and unique sounding singing voice. I wonder how modern music would be today had his life not ended.

I read today that he was doing $400 of heroin per day prior to his death. I don't know much about the cost of heroin in the 90s but that seems like a lot.

Whenever someone dies young, there are so many "what if's". I guess the great ones either sell out or keep re-inventing themselves or break up after a while. In this case, we'll never know which direction it would have been.

Thank you, Tom, for this time travel to my teenage age. Kurt Cobain was a great musician and one of the most amazing souls. Saw a documentarie about his life and he had something really special on him.

Thanks. I think a lot of us saw someone who was real. And that's refreshing.

True! He had a huge influence in my life and also personality.

For me it is the best composer of the grunge band Nirvana @donkeypong
