YouTube Pretending They Aren't For Kids

in #palnet5 years ago

YouTube insists that they aren't a platform for children, they recommend in their policy that you be at least 13 years old to view the site. There is a great deal of content to be found on the platform that even they themselves admit in their policy is not suited for children.

Regardless, videos with children who are 13 and younger, are seen 3x more than other videos on the platform.

Many YouTube creators have picked-up on the simple fact that if you include young kids in your videos that you might be more likely to increase your views as a result.

To cater to children, YouTube developed their YouTube Kids video app, but there has still been disturbing content found just the same, that children have access to seeing.

A recent study shed some light on just how much of a problem children viewing this content might be, discovering that children's content is among the most viewed on the platform, but that shouldn't come as a surprise to many.

Videos on YouTube that were seemingly directly trying to target children reportedly were viewed 65 percent more than those videos which were aimed at other audiences.

Still, YouTube insists that they have always worked to be clear that their general platform is not for people under the age of 13, even though many children might still be viewing or there might be many videos to be found that seem to target kids.

While the filters and settings that they provide might not catch everything, parents have admitted in the past that they do feel more sense of control in being able to watch over what their kids see.

They've even considered removing the accounts of popular child stars.

Parents are against it, they are worried about the decrease in revenue, if YouTube does what it has suggested and moves forward with moving that content onto YouTube Kids instead. Parents can obviously sympathize with wanting to make it a safer environment, but they don't think YouTube Kids is the best business model for them.

Kids Are Addicted To Watching Other Kids Play

According to one psychologist, Dr. N. Eaton, when children watch other kids play with toys it activates the reward component in their brain, there is excitement that comes along with that. This is why they will watch hundreds of videos of kids opening surprise eggs etc and playing with other toys.

It is almost as if they are opening the gift themselves, they arguably experience some of that same excitement.

A great deal of the content is innocent, but there are questionable videos to be found that target children, that's what has raised the alarm with parents in the past, pushing for better controls in an effort to try and prevent their children from being exposed to certain unwanted content.

There are many tips that have been suggested, but at the end of the day some say that sitting there and watching the videos right beside them is the only way that you'll be able to know for certain just what they are being exposed to.

They are for kids. Money from kids is till money. Money doesn't care about age. Money doesn't care about race. Money is Money. Youtube makes tones of it.

Interesting article. My 9 year old watches Lego and football posts on YouTube unsupervised. I do worry about the advertising though. There are a lot of gambling ads that go with sports! 🤔
