Police Officer Accused of Planting Drugs During Traffic Stops

in #justice5 years ago (edited)

More police corruption in Florida, as it's revealed that one former sheriff's deputy had been arrested on charges over his actions of planting drugs on innocent individuals, during minor traffic stops, and then arresting them on bogus drug charges.

And this is the group who you are supposed to call when you get into trouble.

It isn't only a single incident either unfortunately, as we know that there are tens of thousands of police officers in the United States who have been arrested for planting evidence, telling lies, assaulting members of the public, and worse.

One LAPD officer even got caught after he accidentally filmed himself planting cocaine in a suspects wallet. Body cams have surprisingly helped to uncover a great deal of corruption so far, at least when they're left turned on they have that ability to.

Unfortunately, thousands of officers are are investigated every year over allegations of their wrongdoing.

They aren't "all bad" in that they probably don't all outrageously violate the laws and department policies regularly, that are supposed to act as a check-and-balance on their authority. However, it's clear that there is a certain culture that continues to be accepted and celebrated with the police, that wrongdoing is still swept under the rug thanks to a collective code, rather than an effort sought to pursue true justice in the favor of victims. Because on too many occasions we still hear about officers engaging in wrongdoing and not often enough do we hear about serious consequences given as a result of their actions.

Set an example.

Not only do the actions of these officers bring their own occupation and department into disrepute, they also greatly endanger the community and bring harm to peaceful individuals. They also cost the community tremendously with having to pay out millions of dollars in lawsuits when victims pursue justice over this sort of state corruption.

The officer in Florida is facing a number of charges including false imprisonment, official misconduct, fabricating evidence, and more.

If people are expected to call the police for help when they get into trouble, then the police should make it a point to aggressively weed out bad actors from their ranks, without question, because the actions of these individuals can tarnish that reputation, deteriorating the concept in people's minds that the police can help them, rather than harm them.
