It Took 6 Years For This Couple To Win The Right To Plant Veggies In Their Own Yard

After 6 years of fighting in court for their rights they finally succeeded, now they can grow in peace, after recent legislative changes that protect their right to plant vegetables in their own yard.

Hermine Ricketts and her husband T. Carroll maintained a garden on their property for almost two decades, before the state came and told them that it was illegal; their garden was in violation of a particular ordinance which bans front-yard vegetable gardens.

To fight for their right to grow they had to endure a multi-year legal battle against the city of Miami Shores.

They were threatened that they would be fined at least $50 every single day that they refused to get rid of the garden that they had worked for almost 20 years to take care of.

The couple eventually filed a lawsuit to fight for their rights to have that garden and it's been a long, hard, and costly battle.

After a new rule went into effect this July in Florida, people in the region will now have the freedom to plant vegetables and fruits on their own front lawns if they wish to.

It's just unfortunate that it took some bureaucrats, plenty of tax dollars, and a great deal of paper and ink in order for that to be determined.

There is no common sense in threatening to fine a peaceful couple who are simply trying to homestead and live off of their own land. Still, a rule had to be passed that now expressly prohibits the state from prohibiting individuals who own property to grow their own vegetables in their yard.

You couldn't have said it better, "There is no common sense"... with government that is usually the case.

I am really glad they won, its ridiculous not allowing people to grow on their own property, I am growing some now and want to grow a lot more and be self sustainable I hope not to get into issues but would fight for my right too

Oh I've heard much about such rules. It was shock for me at first! In Russia planting is so usual and ordinary thing, it's hard to imagine somebody can forbid you doing it.
Another shock was when I knew that in the USA there're also rules to use different services and workers instead of doing something by your own hands, even if you really can do it. Is it true? I watched many video blogs of emigrants who live there now

Crazy! Glad to see a win though!

same, every little one helps!

I am gobsmacked! Did the couple get refunded for their legal costs? It is the least the city of Miami Shores could do!

There's one weird rule before. I wonder if that rule bars you from planting veg in the backyard.

Just goes to show you that it's worth fighting back against this kind of stuff. Sorry they had to go through it.

sometimes it can be and their victories can then be shared with and extend freedom to others 👍👍nobody should have to endure threats of violence just for growing a garden in their own yard though,...

That's just insane.

Is it one of those communities obsessed with the pristine lawn image ?

I believe this rule can be found in many communities around the country, other individuals have faced similar circumstances in diff states
