Facebook Sues Over Fake Likes And Followers

in #facebook5 years ago

Facebook has recently launched a lawsuit against a company in New Zealand over issues with fake likes and followers on Instagram.

According to the lawsuit, it's because they are looking to protect the integrity of the platform and they argue that the company has ignored multiple requests to stop selling fake engagement services through certain sites.

They are asking for a court in the United States to essentially stop the company from offering those fake like services and they want damages awarded for what they believe are actions that have manipulated the Instagram platform.

It's been known for a long time now that you can purchase followers and other engagement activity from a variety of sources.

There are a variety of packages offered where you can purchase regular likes, buy followers, and more. And the lawsuit argues that the New Zealand company helped to deliver millions of automated fake engagement activity, likes etc, for the customers on the platform.

The group is being sued by Facebook over an alleged breach of contract; they allegedly violated the terms and service of Instagram and Facebook. Not only that, it's also being argued that they violated the CFAA (Computer Fraud and Abuse Act) when they used bots to inflate social engagement after being banned from the service.

Facebook has previously sued other companies as well that have engaged in like-selling, gone after some of those who are promising to boost follower counts for a fee etc.

The company has claimed that this fight is about attempting to prevent inauthentic behavior from taking place on both of their social media platforms, by cracking down on the fake services that offer false engagement activity.

Haha this is like the pot calling the kettle black about the integrity thing. How dare someone come in and make money off their platform that grifts the personal data of its users.

They want to coerce the market on user manipulation and are probably doing this as a marketing to popularize the notion there is integrity to actually protect.

The best thing to do is quit Facecrook!

While true, I avoid entering any content and just use it for a second network that doesn’t interfere with my real network which is steem.

Plus, it is like the titanic and I can throw steem lifeboats to my friends as it goes down.
