Cannabis Advocates In Nebraska Trying To Gather 130,000 Signatures By July

One group that has contributed significant efforts in the state of Nebraska to try and change cannabis legislation is the group Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana. They have been working to try and gather the necessary signatures that are required to add legislative changes to future ballots that would make cannabis changes become a reality in the region.

The coronavirus recently halted their efforts where they had been going around to try and collect signatures of people who express support for fewer cannabis restrictions in Nebraska.

Now, they are recently back to work at gathering those signatures, they need roughly 130,000 of them in order to get that initiative on the ballot. They need to get about 10 percent of the registered voters to give their approval.

Deadline for getting those signatures is the beginning of July.

They need to have collected all of those 130k signatures by then and it isn't clear how many they might have already.

If they are successful then the cannabis initiative would be added to the ballot in the fall come November, giving doctors in the state the ability to recommend cannabis to their patients.

It is still going to likely be a strict list of conditions that qualify, if any doctors are willing to start giving it out. It could also be years before people there gain access to a supply where they can just go in and make a purchase like you would when buying some groceries.

Those who are working to get the signatures admit that they are implementing a few new changes now to try and gather those remaining signatures in a different way than they did prior to the virus event, by using face masks and disposable pens.

It sounds like they are still looking for volunteers and will be funding paid canvassers as well, to try and help them achieve their goal of getting those 130k names.

Right now there are still plenty of restrictions in place regarding all cannabis activities in Nebraska. But lawmakers have hinted that cannabis legalization might be a possibility coming in the future.

“I think that discussion continues and I think if it actually was able to come to a vote, I think that it probably would pass the legislature,... I think the issue of recreational marijuana is still not on the table.” - Gov. L. Kelly (D)

We will have to wait and see until early July if the group has gathered the necessary signatures in order to push that change forward.

It's a shame that people need to work this hard in order to exercise what should be considered natural rights.
