Bee Thefts On The Rise

Beehives have been targeted in a number of countries in recent years, with vandals causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage and the deaths of millions of bees.

In California, at least 200 hives have been stolen in February this year alone just from one orchard. The increasing prevalence of attacks against beehives has put beekeepers on alert, concerned and desperate to come up with a solution that might be able to help.

One hive alone can cost between $200-$500 and so 200 of them going missing means tens of thousands of dollars has been stolen. Some beekeepers have found their livelihood unexpectedly come to a halt after they have faced unimaginable attacks to their property. Hundreds of beehives around the world are stolen every single year. And they don't always steal the hives, sometimes they only come to destroy.

To try and help prevent thefts, beekeepers have turned to solutions with motion senors, security cameras, GPS tracking, and more. Bee associations in other areas like Australia have also sought to put more resources toward investigating and tracking down stolen hives to try and catch thieves.

"many people are not selling bees and demand is high, if you want something and no-one is selling, some people help themselves." - Paul Marsh, Central Queensland commercial beekeeper

There is currently a $10,000 reward that's being offered by the California Beekeepers Association for any information that might tell authorities who is responsible for the crime; helping them to make an arrest.

Who is responsible? There have been a variety of suggestions, including perhaps disgruntled neighbors or even rival beekeepers have been suspected of being behind the increase in hive thefts in recent years.

You can find numerous reports of beehives being stolen in the UK, United States, Australia, Canada, Wales, and other areas. Some of those in the industry have suggested that in recent years, as beekeeping has grown in popularity, so has interest for some folks to try and start their own operation by simply stealing from others.

I think there is something way more sinister at play here.... someone is deliberately destroying the homes of the creatures that majorly help to pollinate countless food crops..... and that they havent been caught yet.. smells fishy. Some have been caught?

This stinks of Monsanto. Hired goons does not seem like a far stretch.

And I wouldn't doubt they are working on a "robot" bee to "solve the world bee problem" they created with their god damned poisons.

Connecting dots all the time. This is evil at work.

Man who would have thought bee hives were such a hot commodity. There is a guy at work that gives away a jar of honey every month that is just a small fraction of what he gets from his bees. Bees natures insect version of gold.

Greed is usually the culprit. I have never understood how one human can steal from another. Something that is not theirs. Something they didn't work for.

I want to know what makes a thief think they are entitled to it? I am not naive, I just don't understand how that kind of brain works.

Thank you for the read, bees are an essential part of our world. We must do everything we can to stop this behavior. I hadn't heard about this.

looking forward to market friday this week:)

Oh, yes!! #MarketFriday loves you!! :)

thank you for your feedback and the tip!🙏

Always a pleasure!

Hi doitvoluntary, bees are soooo important, they play a significant role in the ecology of the environment and stupid greedy people are putting all this at risk. This is just shocking.

What a complete lack of information in this article.

Large numbers of bee hives take a semi-truck to move. And are often moved to pollinate crops. So, where are bee hives showing up?

Where are the calls from old clients saying, "we don't need your services this year."

And, how many of these incidents are just neighbors bee-ing upset that the neighbor has a hive, and so bees are flying around, and they will sting you?

Really need more information.

" So, where are bee hives showing up?"

some hives have been discovered already and in other circumstances they are asking the public for more information.

"how many of these incidents are just neighbors bee-ing upset that the neighbor has a hive, and so bees are flying around, and they will sting you?"

If authorities knew how many were neighbors then they wouldn't still be asking the public for information to lead to an arrest in a myriad of circumstances...

Feel free to check out the related articles below as well to find more information and you could always venture to do your own research on the topic 👍😄 there are literally hundreds of news reports out there detailing the various thefts.

Sending tips with @tipU - how to guide :)

I never would have thought that stealing bee hives was a thing. This society has degraded visibly in my lifetime and we really need to try to instill honor into our future generations.

That is not something I would have considered often stolen.

I'm imagining the fence now...

LOL, ok I can't even write it up I'm laughing so hard.

Actually not a funny thing tho. Bees are vital to agriculture. Bee losses are decreasing fertility of crops globally, and costing millions of dollars in decreased productivity.

Thanks!

Every cause of misery, be it death, destruction even climate change can be originated to greed..
