Important Things in Surviving Earthquake & Tsunami

in #steemiteducation7 years ago

Natural disasters are now predictable before the disaster. But what needs to be prepared by us is how to rescue and our attitude towards the coming of natural disasters.

If viewed from the potential that exists, I will give education how to have a certain attitude when the earthquake and Tsunami disaster came. Why I'm focusing on Tsunami disaster? This is because the place I live is the area that is vulnerable to earthquake and Tsunami. Located in Aceh, Indonesia.

The city where I live is the city with the greatest impact on the Tsunami in 2004. So much drill and education to the community so to be able to face the same disaster in the future.

The first thing that will happen before the tsunami is the arrival of an earthquake. When the first quake, this is what you have to do.

  • Don't panic!

Be calm and do not panic in order to perform the actions of self-salvation and brought your family with you.

  • Immediately go to the field!

Look for space to avoid falling trees or buildings that might collapse. An example is a field, or a large park.

  • If in the room, take cover under a hard table!

When inside a high-rise building or office, the possibility of getting out is very difficult and takes a long time, the action to be taken is to shelter under a table or place that can refrain from debris or fall of objects.

Know the type of the earthquake!

The earthquake that has occurred needs to know whether it is a potential to tsunami or not. Monitor the television or sounds of sirens. If a siren of a tsunami warning sounded, get ready to leave immediately. Because from the phase of the earthquake to the tsunami takes several hours (even just a matter of minutes) to reach the place you are now.

Told the Tsunami Early Warning System (http://cwarn.org) Once generated, a tsunami wave in the open ocean can travel with speeds greater than 800 kilometres an hour (500 miles an hour).  These waves can travel across the Pacific Ocean in less than one day.  Locally generated tsunamis can reach coastlines in just minutes.

Do the following things so we can survive when the tsunami comes:

1. Prepare important items

Before leaving your home and go to a higher place, take the bag containing the important items with you. These items can be diplomas, land certificates, or other important documents. Then bring some survival items in different bags. In the survival bag, prepare some of the items below:

  • Snack and Canned Food
  • Flashlight
  • Communication Tool
  • First Aid Kit
  • Mineral Water

2. Go to a higher place

Go your way to higher ground. Because the tsunami water will come very quickly and with a large volume. If there is a tsunami rescue building around your area, go to the top floor of the building.

Wait until the floods of the tsunami are completely receding. If necessary, use that time to adapt to the evacuation environment.

3. Helps the people around you!

If you feel you are in a safe place, help the people around you! Since the most important principle in evacuation is self-salvation first, and then saving the others. How do you help people if you are in danger?

4. Stay alert!

After the tsunami disaster comes, we will be in temporary shelter. If this happens, then apply this as your principle.

  • Pay attention the cleanliness of the place, food, and drinks. In the event of a flood, it is very easy for germs to spread and infected by it.
  • Be wary of the environment to avoid things that are not desirable. Eg electric shock.
  • Do not enter damaged areas, except when declared safe.
  • Go to disaster post, to get information Establish communication and cooperation with local people.
  • Be prepared to return to a normal life.

This is a step-by-step tsunami disaster mitigation implemented in my area. Usually this way is universal, applicable to tsunami-affected areas, such as Japan, California, most Southeast Asian countries, and other coastal areas.

Natural disasters make social and economic life of society in chaotic. Moreover, if the houses and other buildings suffered severe damage, markets, offices, or schools that are damaged can disrupt economic activity and teaching and learning activities. In order for the conditions to recover, the government and the community must work together to provide the necessary assistance for the recovery.
