Terrible Tales: The End Is Near! (Or is it the Beginning?)

in #doomsday5 years ago

"The End of the World" seems to have been a scenario that has obsessed certain people, pretty much since the beginning of the world.

Whether it's someone on a street corner holding up a sign that reads "Repent! The End is Near!" or someone in the basement who spends their entire life surfing conspiracy theory web sites in search of "proof" that we're all about to die... it's not that rare to encounter someone who's a bit obsessed with "the end."

So I Know This Guy...

I'm hesitant to call Nils a "friend;" he's more like an "online acquaintance" I happen to have crossed paths with for about 15 years... the point being that here's someone who's obsessed with the idea that the Earth's poles are going to shift "anytime now" and the world (as we know it) is going to come to an end.

Problem is, some people go a little overboard.

"It rained for 11 hours straight in Thailand; proof that the pole shift is about to happen!"

"A whale beached itself in the Netherlands; proof that the pole shift is about to happen!"

Whether a pole shift is about to happen — or that's even a realistic scientific possibility or not — this strange form of "ambulance chasing" pretty much causes someone with a cause to start losing credibility. At least in my book. Stick to the science, and shy away from the wishful thinking... if you expect anyone to take you seriously.

Evidently, many are not deterred. For a number of years he ran a forum dedicated exclusively to The Pole Shift, and had several thousand dedicated followers.

"So... About This Wishful Thinking..."

To be honest, I'm not actually critical of the belief. Anyone has the right to have whatever opinions they may.

The thing that baffles me — about Nils, and pretty much anyone who fervently pursues doomsday scenarios and evil government conspiracies — is the whole question of what you will have, when if you prove your theories right?

So now you "know" we're all about to kiss our collective asses goodbye... how does that help improve the quality of your life, particularly if it turns out you don't have all that much life left? Is your last slice of bread going to taste better because you were right about the end of the world? Will you enjoy the sunsets more, because we're all going to be dead in three months?

Probably not...

Thanks for reading... I should really go to bed now, because my tired brain isn't thinking straight. Must be proof of the Pole Shift!

The Earth's magnetic poles have shifted on the past, multiple times. Current understanding of polar magnetic shift is that, like Earth's precession, such event is an expected, regular occurence. Perhaps, the magnetic shift will interfere with current electromagnetic technical civilisation we have built in the last century. It may be interfering with internal sensors of many animals, resulting in the increase of aberrant behaviors.

For men with little to no abilities to function within the current sociocultural matrix, the apocalypse is a very comforting notion. Because these men have nothing, a reset of the human condition to zero would actually be a step up for their future prospects. The obsessive fascination of modern culture with the end of current sociocultural system (whether it be Zombie apocalypse, international economic meltdown, shape-shifting reptiles farming humans for food, or imminent nuclear war) seems to illustrate the hopeless reality of the misled younger generation.

Thanks for a great comment, @soo.chong163!

I believe you are quite right that a lot of those who feel "hopeless and lost" find a measure of comfort in supporting ideas and causes that might work as a sort of "reset button" that would send those who are clearly more intelligent, wealthy, successful or whatever... "back to the stone age."

It is a trend that has long been a concern... the way it feels like more and more people are reaching for a lower common denominator, rather than striving to reach a higher one.

I actually have seen credible evidence that the magnetic poles are moving more rapidly of late than expected. Certainly the magnetic poles do appear to reverse from time to time. However, I know of no reason that would make my ass kissable. Might screw up our compasses and wreak havoc with electronics, but magnets aren't generally known as lethal weapons, and since I've been living on one all my life, which includes occasionally turning around and reversing my experience of the magnetic field most days, I see no reason to fear magnetic pole reversal.

It's a weird fear I think. Probably folks that don't understand magnetism find them scary.

Edit: curious, I took a look around and found this. Apparently magnets could turn us all into refugee welcoming atheist liberals. Now that's scary! Coincidentally, if that's the result of Magnetic Pole Reversal, Nils should be considerably relieved after the worst happens and the threat centers of his brain are disabled.

To be honest, I'm less worried about whether pole shifts happen — or whether they make our asses kissable in the process — than about people who obsess over various forms of pseudoscience and then inflict it on a bunch of people around them!

But appreciate the share... goes to show you can find "proof" of almost anything on the Internet! And — as we all know — if it's on the Internet, it must be TRUE!

Edited to add: I am truly frightened by this whole idea that we could all become godless placard waving liberals....
