My Magnolia Tree Is Flowering

Yes, it is time for my magnolia tree to flower. I couldn't get a close up as it is way up there. This tree was here when I first moved in over 28 years ago.

Of course it has gotten taller since then. That is to my benefit cause it shades part of my house. So most of the afternoon the house stays cool because of it's shade.

I thought you might like to check the trunk of this tree. It splits. My neighbor from years ago told me that in the earlier life of this tree the two were separating to the part that the trunk would break apart.

My neighbor who told this to me has long since passed away, but he told me that owner he knew put a long threaded rod through the split and put washers and bolts on each side.

That held the tree together and also when the tree grew bigger it started to absorb the rod, washers and bolts. Well I can't even tell that there something keeping this tree together.

I guess if I had an x-ray machine I could show you the metal that used to help keep this tree together. I'm glad it worked and that my old neighbor told me the story.

My old neighbor also told me that kids in the neighborhood would like to climb this tree. The kids even attached a rope to the tree to help them get up this tree.

I even caught a boy up in the tree. Well, I told him he has to come down. Last thing I need is to have an injured kid that climbed my tree and can you imagine dealing with the parents?

Well, I did take the rope down and cut limbs that were closer to the ground. Now that I think about it, those kids that used to climb this tree are over thirty years old now.

They probably have there own kids trying to climb their neighbors trees.

On thing about the magnolia tree is that it sheds its leaves in the summertime. I used to get mad that I have to rake leaves in the winter and the summer.

Now days I don't have that feeling. I actually look forward to the leaves. You see, leaves are packed full of nutrition for my other trees.

So I just dump the leaves under my fruit trees. When I water I just water the leaves and it sinks to the ground below and also helps break down the leaves to make rich soil.

The leaves also act in a way to hold moister in the ground. The tree in this picture is my nectarine tree. It doesn't matter how much leaves I add it always breaks down and goes lower.

It all works out as the waste of my magnolia tree is food for my nectarine tree. I like how that works.
