Rare Cat Breed: The Chartreux

Now the Chartreux is one breed of large, fancy cat I would like to have. Though, it will be more likely get stolen by jealous neighbors who will deny it to the death!

Typically weighing between 7 and 16 pounds and originating from France, this rare breed of cat is not actually recognzed as its own breed by the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCF) in the U.K. because it resembles the British Shorthair and the Russian Blue. These cats tend to keep a low profile without making any noise and some are actually considered mute.

French naturalist, mathematician, cosmologist, and encyclopédiste, George-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707-1788), described them as the cat of France and gave them the Latin name Felis catus coeruleus, meaning "blue cat".

The breed was heavily reduced during World War I and wild populations were not found after World War II. A combined effort by European cat breeders kept this beautiful breed from extinction.

The Chartreux is adaptable to any home with people who will love it and give its gorgeous coat a weekly combing. These non-aggressive cats make good family pets that they get along with children very well.

Thanks to arca86 for cat video.

They are quite beautiful cats-- a friend of mine had one, many years ago. "Max" was quite large and had this amazingly thick fur... and like you said, not much of a voice.
