Eminem's "Mockingbird" : Emotional Pain and Guilt

in Steem Sri Lanka2 years ago

" And if you ask me to, Daddy’s gonna buy you a mockingbird
I’ma give you the world
I’ma buy a diamond ring for you, I’ma sing for you
I’ll do anything for you to see you smile
And if that mockingbird don’t sing and that ring don’t shine
I’ma break that birdie’s neck
I’ll go back to the jeweler who sold it to ya
And make him eat every carat, don’t f##k with Dad! (Ha ha!)"

Eminem – Mockingbird

Well, that's the father. Don't you think? Every time I hear this verse, I feel the emotional depth that these lyrics are taking me. Mockingbird comes from Eminem's album "Encore" (2004), and it's one of the best performances and lyrics from the Rap God. The song speaks about the struggles of Eminem's relationship with his daughters Hailie and Alaina Mathers during some tough times in their family.

Eminem itself didn't have a pleasant childhood, and ironically things with his wife Kimberly Anne Scott were not good either. She was away from them. So, Eminem once said, through this song he is trying to tell two kids what's going on and make them understand.

This gotta be the most emotional lyrics coming out of him. And the visual of the song is that he is watching the videos of them together, happy, as a family.

He feels guilty for the things faced by his children and he is looking for a better relationship with them. And he is not going to deny that he was not there for them as well. He was busy with work and his wife was in the news for bad behavior.

The lyrics are pretty straightforward about what happened, and he says that he was trying to give everything to them that he didn't have in his childhood. But, in the long run, the kids lose the love of their parents which made it hard for them. Eminem says, that he is ready to do anything for the comfort of his daughters. But, even though he tried so hard, things were not as same as expected. So, it's more like a guilty feeling from his side as well.

Here, he says that he is ready to kill the Mockingbird, for the happiness of his kids. That he is ready to break all the boundaries.

As much as this is a masterpiece from Eminem, it shows how he mixed his own experience and emotions into these lyrics. It's a reminder of the importance of cherishing our moments with the loved ones, especially the kids before it gets too late.

"Now hush, little baby, don’t you cry
Everything’s gonna be alright
Stiffen that upper lip up, little lady, I told ya
Daddy’s here to hold ya through the night
I know Mommy’s not here right now
And we don’t know why
We fear how we feel inside
It may seem a little crazy, pretty baby
But I promise, Momma’s gon’ be alright"

I think the title; Mockingbird itself says a lot. co-existence of innocent joy and vulnerability. The lyrics worth spending time pondering over it!
