Introduction

Steem-ua was announced two month ago, at the end of august. It was immediate hit and took Steemit by storm. In a week or two, the project collected more than 300k in SP delegation. So, what is this all about? Why so many people find it valuable and decide to delegate to it?

Steem-ua, or Steem User Authority is an alternative user reputation system to the current system that Steemit have. A lot of people complain about the current reputation system, arguing that it is broken. The reputation can be bought with money. People can buy bots to vote on their posts and their reputation will go up. It is not an accurate representation of the reputation.

So, @scipio and @holger80 decide to do something about this and created a new kind of reputation system for Steemit. The Steem User Authority, @steem-ua was born.
Isn’t this great. This is what the open source projects are all about. If you don’t like something, you don’t just complain about it. There is a real possibility for the individual to go and change things. To build an alternative reputation system in this case. It is a great example of how things should work.

How does it work?

They have explained the ranking system in their announcement post, and after that again in this post.
One of the most important things for the UA is who is who is following who. They are looking into your followers, and then the followers of your followers etc.
In this way the account network is build and a UA score is calculated. Also, the engagement rate, the overall influence of each user, and the quality of the content each user creates, are considered.
They have a web UI steem-ua.com, where the top 100 account are showed.

At the moment on no. 1 place with UA score of 8.549 is @good-karma, followed by @jesta, @gtg, @roelandp, @timcliff etc. Most of these guys are the top witnesses. The UA rank is calculated daily, so it may vary.

To check your UA, you need to login with steemconnect.
And here how the page with the individual UA score looks like.

Screenshot_1.png

I have a UA score of 1.857 and I’m on the 28667 on the ranking list. I have quite a space to grow 😊.

How is @steem-ua rewarding the community?

@steem-ua rewards it delegators. For a delegation of 25 SP, there is one vote per week. Two votes for 50 SP, 100 SP equals 4 votes and 250 SP, 7 votes per week. For the heavy delegators, and they have a lot of them, they have a special rewarding program.

So how does @steem-ua differs from the other supporting project out there, or from the voting bots. Well the big difference is of course the UA rank. As higher the rank, the better the votes.

But the UA rank is not the only thing that matters for the support from @steem-ua. What is special about @steem-ua is that they are ranking each post they upvote. Now, this is something.
For ranking the posts, they use the user rank, the votes that the post gets from other users, and the number of comments and interaction the post gets. Usually the votes from @steem-ua comes a bit later, few days after posting, so all those factors are considered.

They leave a comment for each post they vote on. Here how that looks on one of my last post.

Screenshot_2.png

We can see that out of 244 contributions my post was ranked at #135.

Shortly after the UA project was announced, I decided to follow the hype and made a small delegation. Since I’m developing at the moment, I didn’t have much, and delegated the minimum of 25 SP. Shortly after this, the first vote came in. This was for a post that I made in the beginning of September. And because of my small delegation of 25 SP, I was getting a vote per week. And they were clever, usually voted on the heaviest posts of mine. Just a week ago, I was able to collect some more SP and delegate another 25 SP, or 50 SP in total.

Following my growth with @steem-ua

It is interesting to watch your progress. I must say that seeing my name on that list, didn’t left me immune to it. It motivated me to go up the lather. I have been closely monitoring my progress on the UA ranking list. Here is how it went for me.

922 Oct 20181.802290430.24
1024 Oct 20181.830292020.29

Some interesting numbers here. I have moved from my humble rank of around 41k to 29k. Not bad. Till new years eve I might enter in the to 20k 😊. The UA rank also improved from 1.291 to 1.830. No. 2 here I come.

On the ROI side of things, for this period I have received 10 votes for about 2$. So 2$ for 25 SP delegation. That is about 10% in less than two months. With a perspective for further growth. Now, if I’m not mistaken, I think that the ROI of self-vote is about 1,7% per month. This is much better, but it comes with some effort put into it.

Votes for posts on utopian are excluded from this analysis. Also, I have one more vote recently, because I increased my delegation from 25 to 50 this week. I’m excluding that one as well, because I want to make this analysis for a 25 SP delegation.

Comparison with other projects

Some of the projects that offers support to Steemians are SBI and qurator. Now, these projects have their own specifics and are not easily comparable. For example, SBI offers a lifetime support for each Steem you send to them. This means no delegation but liquid Steem. Also, they ask for your daily vote if you want to increase your share. But they don’t do ranks of the posts and will vote on whatever you post. If you post short posts, maybe this is better. UA is much more specific and advanced. If you make quality content it will pay you more. In this way, UA incentives quality content.

@qurator is one of the support systems on Steemit that is promoting quality content. They have a lot of options and combination for support, depending on the delegations and monthly fees. To be able to get the support from qurator you need to apply and meet some expectation. Also, onetime entry fee is charged. After this you may stop with the monthly fee or delegations, the votes will be smaller, but it will go on. As more you pay per month, or delegate, the bigger the support from @qurator.

I like qurator and what they are doing. I’m also a member. The quality check what they are doing is when the user enters the system, and maybe some occasional control later.
Here UA comes on the top because they are checking each post and ranking them. Also, if you like to post short post, you have the possibility to do it, but they will not vote on those ones.

At the moment @qurator have better engagement with the community. They are making daily posts with reports, promoting their members, organizing contests etc. In this way qurator may give its members more visibility. UA can follow some of the things qurator is doing and engage more with the community.

Conclusion

From what I can tell if someone write quality content and have strong intentions to do it, at the moment @steem-ua offers the best possibility to grow. They have a system for user reputation, but maybe more important a system for post ranking. In this way each post is ranked and compared. I find this more important than the UA rank of an account. We all have our good days and bad days. And we all have our good posts and some post with lower quality. Ranking each post is motivational for everyone, no matter how long he or she has been around. At the moment, this is only one thing on which the votes are based. Probably it is a good idea to increase the weight even more on this factor.

UA truly offers the possibility for growth. Of course, it will not happen overnight, and a serious effort is required, but it is possible.
By doing this @steem-ua is making Steemit a better place for everyone.

All the best

As you know, I tend to judge posts on two axis: Content and presentation. Your content is excellent. This is a well thought out overview. It's thorough, it has editorial and personal content. It's exactly the kind of thing I'm always looking for.

And on the visual side, the presentation is fine. Well chosen images, illustrating your points. Well done.

I would, however, strongly urge you to work on improving the overall quality of the writing. Well written, careful text, can deliver the ideas and information so much more effectively.

EDIT: This post should not have been reviewed, as Steem-US is not, at present open source, and the repository has not been active in 11 months. I apologize.

I wasn't aware of that. It is a bit confusing at the moment, is UA an open source or not.

Thanks for the review @didic.
Can you please give me some examples as usual.

I agree. I also started with a 25 sp delegation, but liked it so much I upped it to 100sp currently. It's a good investment and spurs us on to greater interactivity. Thanks for sharing this @dalz :-)

Glad you found it interesting. I also see we are on simular path :)

Congratulations! Your post has been selected as a daily Steemit truffle! It is listed on rank 9 of all contributions awarded today. You can find the TOP DAILY TRUFFLE PICKS HERE.

I upvoted your contribution because to my mind your post is at least 11 SBD worth and should receive 140 votes. It's now up to the lovely Steemit community to make this come true.
