Black Beans From the Garden! Picked our first black beans today and shelled a bunch of them.
I planted some black beans this year just from grocery store beans and was happy to find they did well. I will have to plant a lot more to get a big harvest next year. Here are a few photos of the shelling and the harvest. Beans are a great crop because they don't really require much care. They don't need fertilizer because there roots contain nitrogen fixing bacteria which helps them get the nitrogen they need. They also are very disease resistant and I had no insect problems. I do everything organic and beans are one crop I don't have to worry about. They always do well.

Thank you @gardengirlcanada! If you get bored in the winter and just want to grow something you can throw a couple of beans in a pot of soil and they will grow very quickly. You may not get any beans but a nice plant just the same. I sometimes can't wait to start growing again in the winter so I sprout , grow micro greens and experiment.
Oh I do grow all winter in my home. I just might try these black beans. I also sprout micro greens. The pea ones are my favorite. Thanks

Thank you very much @goldendawne! These will store dry like this for up to a couple of years and just need to be soaked overnight before cooking. It's easier than canning. I just let them dry on the plant before picking and then store them in a dry place.

What other ones can you do that with? Kidney? Northern?
You can do it with any of them. You may want to test them out by trying to sprout them if you are using grocery store seeds because they may be old. If you just soak them over night and then put then in a colander and rinse then a couple of times a day by the second day they should have sprouted and then you can plant them. I did not test these and I planted them about an inch deep so it took them over a week to come up.Good luck with them. I think you will like growing them. Plant a lot if you want to get a big harvest.
