Mesquite Thorns CAN KILL!
Yesterday, while cleaning up some tree branches on my little homestead, I got tangled up in these Mesquite thorns. I was wearing leather gloves, heavy boots and canvas pants. The protective clothing was in place, yet some how I still got stuck.
The Injury
One of these massive needles swung down and caught me right on the kneecap! It stung, but I just brushed it off and kept working. The pain steadily grew throughout the evening. I thought maybe if I just get off of it for a while I'll be ok.
This was a good opportunity to go sit and edit video. I had to work on one of my beekeeping videos anyway so I took a pint of Kombucha upstairs and got on the computer.
By the time I was done editing video I could barely walk downstairs. I've been stuck with Mesquite needles before and they never hurt this bad. Anyway, it was 11:30 so I just went to bed.
The Nurse
An hour later I was tossing and turning. The pain was too much for me to sleep. My wife woke up and suggested that we go see if there was a part of the needle still in my knee. We got to the edge of the tub and started digging around with a hot needle, but couldn't find anything. I took some Tylenol and rubbed on some topical pain relieving gel.
The Prognosis
My wife is one that can't let things like this go. She got on the ipad and started researching all about what can happen with Mesquite needle puncture wounds. She laid there reading all the horrible stories out loud. Basically it turns out that I'm either gonna die or lose my leg! I told her "You are not helping me by reading all those stories". She laughed and stopped reading aloud.
The Sleep
The meds were working so I was able to finally get some sleep. This morning the pain is much more subtle. Hopefully I can keep my leg :)
Thank you for sharing this time with me!

I get one of these in the sole of my rubber shoes every once and a while. It penetrates the sole just enough so that I feel it, but it I weren't wearing shoes at that moment, I would hate to be my pediatrist lol.
Oh yes! We've had to pull a bunch of them out of our crocs! LOL
The only thing that could be worse than a mesquite needle to the kneecap would be a spinal tap, I think? Your wife sounds like an angel...I bet she'd move mountains to make sure you don't lose that leg, so you'd better not give her too much flak about her web md'ing. Especially if you're going to let her go rooting around in your knee with a hot needle again 😂
Hope you feel better soon!
Haha! I've learned in my 21 years with this beauty to trust her and not hold her back when she's on to something 😍
This was a gentle reminder that homesteading can hurt! Ok, maybe not so gentle. The wild blackberries get me every single day Lol
No pain no gain! LOL
Right on!
Great post....too funny!
Do you have Mesquite up in your neck of the woods? I saw your poison ivy problems.
Nope...wish cause I'd use it for BBQ. Instead we have this beauty in our woods. The black locust. Also known as black death (what I call it). And it's no good for BBQ. :(
Oh geez. I don't know if it's better or worse. On one hand it's like a sword compared to a dagger, but at least you can see it coming!
Just between you and me, I'm convinced that Yeshua's crown of thorns was from a mesquite tree.
My family hails from city named Mesquite. Yep.
If Mesquite trees were around that area, they very well could have been use.
Wow, hope you're OK! And thanks for the warning.
a little sore, but I'm walking so I call that a win :)
I hope you get to keep your leg! There are great prosthetics these days though, like those wonderful cyborg-like running prosthetic legs :)
So either way you're good!
Oh no, unless you die ofcourse. I hate looking up illnesses on Google :P
I would have to have a Swiss Army Leg with all kinds of homesteading and gardening implements built in! :)
That would be awesome!
Oh yeah! I can just see swinging my new built in scythe to clear the fence line! Nice.
Interesting daddy!
Oh wow hope your ok
Thank you. It's getting better, not worse so I think I'll keep my leg 😉
That's good then
Damn, hope everything turns out ok!
Thank you. I think I'll be alright. I'm sitting at work this morning. The pain is mild and my limp is barely noticeable 😉
