Convincing a Friend to Ditch Twitch and Move to Dlive

in #dlive7 years ago (edited)

A friend of mine has been streaming on Twitch for a couple of weeks now and gets around one or two viewers on average. It's not even uncommon for him to stream a couple of hours without anyone even watching his stream. Getting an audience on Twitch seems to be very hard if you're just starting out, so I wanted to help him by suggesting he might want to consider moving to Dlive. There you have far less competition and you have a real opportunity to earn something without needing a big following.

My Arguments

I personally believe that my friend would do much better of Dlive than on Twitch, especially since he's just starting out. One of my main arguments for this is the fact that he's been streaming for a couple of weeks now, and hasn't really earned anything while streaming. On Dlive, he surely would have gotten at least some rewards.

The game he's playing the most is Heroes of the Storm, which I haven't seen too many people play on Dlive. That fact alone could mean that there's still a gap to be filled on Dlive, as I'm sure that there is at least some demand for that game. I've also assured him that I'd be more than happy to help him set everything up.

Last but not least, I've explained that there are also massive benefits to using a decentralized streaming platform as opposed to a centralized solution like Twitch. You don't have to reach a certain threshold to be able to monetize your stream, which you do need on Twitch (to get a subscribe button). The chance of getting your stream removed is also much lower. Twitch can decide at any time to remove your stream, even if you follow their rules!

His Counter-Arguments

When we looked at the Dlive website together, he mentioned that there were many streams which hadn't earned anything. He wasn't too sure if it would really make a difference to switch over to Dtube. Another big issue was that the stream quality seemed to be much lower than on Twitch.

The ability to make use of third-party extensions and plugins also seemed like something he was worried about. He already has some plugins set-up on Twitch, it would be impossible to have the same plugins on Dtube, at least for now.

Another (silly) argument he made was that he would lose his two regular viewers on Twitch. I say silly, because I don't think it would take him that long to get them back on Dtube.

How Did it End?

I managed to convince him to create an account on Steemit and at least check it out again when his account was created. While he hasn't mentioned it again, I'm pretty sure that I'll be able to persuade him to try and stream a couple of days on Dlive, just as a test. When he does this, I'll definitely give him an upvote and share his stream, just so he has a positive first experience with Dlive.

I really think that Dlive will become much bigger in the future, so it really pays off to get established on the platform early on.

Getting people to move from their comfort zones can be hard. I have tried to get 2 people on to Steemit lately, both have created accounts and both have done nothing so far. I don't want to push as this causes them to go the other way. One of them does YouTube stuff, so similar I suppose to your friend.

Yeah. Totally agree. Don't know if you've noticed. Some quality contents on steemit don't get acknowledged at all. This is a major let down. Especially to new users on the platform

I got little attention when I started, it takes time here.

Same here and it takes a while before you figure out the best ways to get your content noticed.

Yeah it does, and you really have good contents on your blog. More so I think you've used some nice tactics cos I've been here since January, and I'm still picking my feet 😁

Just stick with it, eventually things start to happen. The more you work it the more it gives back.

I was already happy that he made a Steemit account, but you're right about not pushing too hard. Usually it has the opposite effect. It's hard to get other people interested in blogging. I often see people compare Steemit to Facebook, but that really gives them an inaccurate view IMO.

Facebook is something that requires MUCH less effort and isn't used for blogging as much as Steemit is.

Steemit is all about business. Once you're on the platform, you get this formal feeling. And more so everybody wanna see quality content. Won't say the same for facebook

I'd watch heroes of the storm. it's one I've been curious about and don't see much. Why get him over here and we can give a good welcome :P.

I don't know if twitch integrates with youtube, but if he uploaded to youtube and embedded the youtube in the steemit post, it would work natively like that. Not sure if that changes anything.

Also, you mean dlive and not dtube right?

Good catch, can't believe I messed up the title. And yeah if my friend joins, I'll give him some promotion and an upvote of course ;)

I have been toying around with doing some Dlive streaming of Diablo 3, but I haven't been able to get the connection working right. I don't think I would probably make much on upvotes, but I wanted to try it once just to see if I could do it. I have been locked out of my Diablo account for a while now and haven't been able to try it out though. I hope someday I can.

You could end up getting surprised, maybe you'll get an upvote from Dtube ;) Maybe I should also try it, even though I'm not really playing that many games.

Yeah maybe. I posted a recorded rift run a while ago and didn't get much. It's the whole live streaming thing I have been working on getting set up. Hopefully I can access my account again sometime soon.

For now, I will say dtube and dlive isn't giving much gain, though I prefer it to twitch. People rarely click on the dtube link to watch your video. I will personally recommend dlive and dtube videos to be played directly from steemit, instead of referring you to dtube . People might just watch.

Don't know what's your opinion. But I think that dtube and dlive link redirection makes some people not to bother watching

What do you mean with link redirection? Hadn't noticed that at all.

Which platform do you use to access the steem blockchain?

Just regular old steemit.com and sometimes Busy.

Had the same dicussion on Friday morning. Time will tell....

I upvoted your contribution because to my mind your post is at least 24 SBD worth and should receive 136 votes. It's now up to the lovely Steemit community to make this come true.
