Not sure the cause of this forest fire but it is on the other side of the canal from town so not to much of a worry. There was a fire out Cherrycreek by the water reserve they are still patrolling but I believe it is controlled, joys of summer in a forest environment.

This picture you can see the white previously burnt trees poking above the new growth along the mountain side. This is a natural occurrence and though very damaging in the short term does revitalize the area with new growth. The low brush and dead burns away being replaced with new trees which burn much slower than any undergrowth, previous burn areas tend to be resistant to future burns.

Imagine being a small flame on the ground trying to reach the tree tops. Without the fuel of the underbrush to be able to burn through the bark and climb the trunk of the tree to be able to then spread quickly consuming the trees typically the fire will burn itself out.

Hanging with Mel’s family today, been a good day so far just relaxing. It is fairly odd for Mel’s entire family to be at one place at the same time, never mind during the summer and at the lake. Sproat Lake, the lake which destroyed my appreciation of all other lakes by being so freaking perfect. Warm, crystal clear, easy access, best of all is the 4pm cool off breeze.

I would say the only lake I have seen that beats this lake in beauty is Christina Lake near the US border in the mountains, it looked like the ocean with sandy white beaches and crazy clear green water. Yet I do not think Christina Lake is nearly as clean as Sproat Lake.

The native Indians used to practice controlled burn techniques to hinder the amount of fire spread. Later in the year they would intentionally start fires strategically to create barriers around their communities and further more burn areas to help reintroduce nutrition simultaneously clearing the land for planting. Being a fire starter was a very honoured title to hold within their community as you had a large part to play in everyone’s safety and survival. Just goes to show fire has been part of life here in British Columbia for as long as we have knowledge of.
