From cinema to Supercomputers: Rise of a country

in #economy7 years ago

Every time when China comes into play during a conversation, everyone has different impressions. In the past few years I have seen the continuous development of the country, in really positive meaning.

There is an area, where everyone able to see the difference:

"Cinema"

When the movie "Mission Impossible 3" was announced in 2006, I have seen first time a Chinese production company after the main title.

Last weekend we went to a cinema, to see the xXx: Return of Xander Cage movie. The main interesting thing is not the movie content, much more the production setup.

The main studio was Columbia pictures, and after this company we have seen only Chinese companies. The star was Vin Diesel as in the first release, and we have seen a lot of Chinese stars, which show a brilliant strategy.

In the past 80 years, American movies were dominant in the movie market. If this process will continue, soon Chinese stars will be known at the same level as current American superstars. After some successful movie story / film, they will be able to sell the movies with their own names. With the financial support they have enough money to push marketing to these movies, and reach their targets.

Why this interesting as an IT professional?

We have the same process in both IT and both in consumer products. It doesn't matter, what we are talking about: a mobile phone, or a supercomputer.

As I mentioned in my previous post, the Chinese supercomputer "Sunway TaihuLight". This computer has built from their own components. It has far more performance, than any other on the TOP500 list. No one can think about their developments as a copy of another Intellectual Property. With time, the difference between them, and the competitors will gain more and more.

Now they announced their Exascale strategy:

This will be a game changer, like the landing on the moon. Can't wait to see this in production!

I think the dominance of this country will be unstoppable, if the other countries don't realize the importance of the innovation in their future strategy. They realized this. One fact which I heard. Huawei employed 70K employee in R&D department. They flow the money for future investment. Who working on all innovation topic, it will be gain in the future.
As AI and Robotics come into a view, this multiplied thousand times! Without investment most of the companies will loose their future.

I deal often with small Chinese companies. My business is not big enough (yet) to purchase direct from the manufacturer as I buy in less than shipping container amount. I see them as being just like everyone else. They are trying to make a living and survive in a world where people base their views on what the governments do, not who the people are. Are there Chinese people I will not do business with. Yes. But there are companies from every country I do business with that I will not work with. It is not the people as a whole, it is a small portion that give everyone a bad name. It is this way in every country.

China is nowhere close to surpassing the success of Hollywood. It may be the case that China will produce massive blockbusters in the future. However, blockbusters are not why Hollywood is a success. Hollywood has dominated cultures across the world for decades. China is nowhere to be seen on the culture front. As far as computers, yeah China is a big player.
