Is Cybersecurity the best industry to be in now?
An ex-colleague of mine shared this wonderful post on cybersecurity mentorship with our chat group today. I thought it is good for me to also share this here and make some comments. There is one particular paragraph in the article which I resonate with. Here goes,
Cybersecurity professionals are life-long learners. We put in our 40+ hours a week at work, but it never ends there. The field is constantly changing. Every day, something new comes out. A new exploit. A new patch. New software. A tactic that worked yesterday might no longer work today. Because of this constant state of metamorphosis, a cybersecurity pro is always studying. We are reading news articles. We are catching up on Twitter. We are working on certifications, on a CTF, or whatever it is that keeps our endorphins escalated. We never stop.
It is not all fun and rosy
Being in the cybersecurity industry for about 8 years now, and I have came across many people. Some from the same industry but mostly not.
Many who are outside the cybersecurity industry often congratulate me for picking the right job. They often envy that cybersecurity is one of the hottest industries now and there is always a shortage of talents in this area. Some of them are even considering a mid-career switch to jump on the bandwagon.
While I largely agree and count myself fortunate to be able to work in an area where I have interest in, I must still say that it isn't always fun and rosy. As the article rightly pointed out, it is a never ending learning journey in the cybersecurity industry.
We have to keep up with technologies. Be it AI, cloud computing, blockchain, IoT or virtual reality, we have to know how each of them work. At least at the high level. Only with knowledge, can we keep abreast of the security risks and be an effective cyber defender.
Besides the constant learning, certain cybersecurity functions also require late nights and weekend work. Some are also doing 12 hours shifts to provide round-the-clock monitoring of threats and attacks. So, while I thank all who said I made the right career choice, I will just like to say that it is not an easy industry to be in.
Conclusion
To all who aspires to be in this industry, do ask yourself if you are willing to take the extra mile to learn and keep yourself up to date with the latest technologies and threats. Every job has it's pros and cons, so for those who wants to be in the industry just because it is a hot one, do think twice. Furthermore, it is usually not the best choice to follow what is currently hot. Instead, we should think of what's going to be hot next :)
Thanks for reading and do share your thoughts!

I guess if one is passionate about IT, one who finds solving problems challenging, and are constantly finding new challenge, he will like to be in this field. :-)
That pretty much sums up the job description. 😁

Hello @culgin
Computer science, as well as medicine and many other careers, must always be up to date. Constantly there are many advances, even doctors must be going to conferences and seminars to be up to date with the newness of their careers. The problem with cybersecurity is that you are not fighting against one person but against millions of hackers who do not sleep and are looking to break the security of all systems. In fact, they also have annual meetings and share information. Hehehe
I love your career
PS: I guess it's thanks to them that there's this world of blockchain.
Thanks for the comment!

Probably together with Artificial intelligence it is!
Dear @culgin
We just have to make the effort to move forward, it's not because this is fashionable, I think that this is already a form of economic survival and you must be very vigilant to do well protecting everything you do, because your mistake of not being safe can be very expensive.
Greetings from Venezuela.
Yes. It is very important as technology is so tightly knitted into every aspect of the we economy. A successful cybersecurity attack will be detrimental for most organizations, even governments
