Testing Testing: Steemit's Never Ending Beta Mode

Steemit quietly passed its third birthday recently, and it just may be a record breaker for the longest beta test phase in history.

So far I have only been able to find one application that has outstripped this mammoth 3 year test phase, and that is a game called DayZ which has been in alpha test mode since 2013. However I can't find figures for web applications such as Steemit.

So what changes have we seen in 3 years?

  • There were no vote sliders when I first joined, your vote was your vote and you gave it 100% or not.

  • Bid bots didn't exist.

  • There were no rewards on comments (much to my dismay)

  • The vote rewards algorithm was different, and your vote equity increased the more people (especially whales) voted on an article that you had.

  • Most people's votes were worth zero. The above mentioned algorithm meant that most people's votes were not worth anything unless a big SP holder came and voted after you.

  • You had to wait 104 weeks before being able to withdraw all of your stake (now reduced to 13)

Those are the ones I can remember, I'm sure there are many more and of course I didn't mention any backend changes of which I bet there have been hundreds.

I do remember "groups" being mentioned as an add-on feature pretty early on, three years later we're still waiting . . .

WHEN DID YOU JOIN STEEMIT AND WHAT CHANGES DO YOU REMEMBER? DO YOU BELIEVE STEEMIT WILL EVER COME OUT OF THE BETA STAGE?

AS EVER, LET ME KNOW BELOW!

Well, they have said to focus more on the backend development of Steem, rather than Steemit. I use SteamPeak as a main front end anyway, so the state of Steemit doesn't seem to relevant to me, on the long run at least. Short term it might hurt, which is why I think it would be important to tell about other options.

I hear you regarding SteamPeak, and I've tried using it and things like Busy, but I just find myself always using Steemit...

I guess the Steemit habit is a hard one to break :D

I'm waiting for the Chad version

Wasn't GMail in beta for absolutely ages? I seem to remember that being years.

I remember also that our 100% votes were worth 25% of what they are now and you could happily cast 40 of em a day without worrying about voting power. I do miss the days of not worrying about voting power!

Communities were mentioned within 6 months of the start I believe.i think there was also an integrated chat mooted, even teased by ned in a post once.

I believe we will come out of beta this year, how's that for optimism!

Gmail was in Beta for around 6 months I seem to remember, I got one of the invite mails, and soon after everyone had one.

I believe we will come out of beta this year, how's that for optimism!

Now that's what I call optimism right there!

We've added the ability to Resteem
The pretty green logo and nightmode.
We can share to twitter and other places.

Add the ones you mentioned.

That's all I can think of...

OMG The wallet. haha, the wallet.

Ah yes, forgot about the logo and nightmode, though wasn't the share ability there from the start? I can't remember.

I forgot the wallet too! :-)

I joined steemit last August 2017. Changes I remember, wallet open in new tab, Google ads showing and steem logo change.

In my opinion, 20 years from December 2016 HF beta will end and enter alpha...

Yeah I forgot the Google ads, luckily I have ad blocker to make sure I'm not constantly reminded of STiNC's betrayal.

I think 20 years might be a tad optimistic! :-)

These aren't even changes to Steemit, but to the blockchain itself.

So basically we just received vote sliders lol

I've been on steemit since january last and all those changes u talked about had already happened. The only change I can think of is the wallet split(which is kind if frustrating)

Hopefully they ll start making some changes but other than that, looks like it might beta for life.
