Terribly Unlucky

I was reading today about another top sportsmen being struck down with an incurable disease. Rob Burrow was a Leeds Rhino Rugby League player and has been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. Two other top sportsmen have also had this in the last 10 years that I have known of this disease.

Joost Van Der Westhuizen who was a dynamic scrum half who played for South Africa and Doddy Weir who was a lock for Scotland. Joost I am sorry to say died a few years ago and being uncurable right now is a horrible way to go. It works on your nervous system and you just wither away into nothing really. Joost attended the function I was at in 2015 as he was a member of the Rugby World Cup winning team of 1995.

Doddy is still fighting on.

It shows you that it can happen to anyone as these were top sportsmen who were as fit as a fiddle. They all had fame and fortune and would swap that in a heartbeat to be cured. They can at least use their name to create awareness for this terrible disease helping to advance the research hoping to find a cure one day. Doddy in his first year raised just over
£1 million via his charity.

Life is short and we have to live life to it's fullest at every opportunity. One never knows what cards are going to be dealt out to any of us and it is sad to know what the families of these two players are going to have to go through over the years to come. I just wish and hope one day that cures will be found for these terrible things that hang over our heads.

We probably wouldn't know about MND unless someone famous or well known contracts it. The more people that are aware then I am hoping more financial support gets ploughed into researching this.
