Mini Vlog // I Could Be Wrong, But...

in #vlog8 years ago

Hi Friends!

The inspiration for today's mini-vlog comes from an unexpected source - Benjamin Franklin. In his auto-biography, he offered a great piece of advice that I am going to start using.

When he was getting into a conversation or argument where he felt strongly about his opinion - he got into the practice of always leading with "I could be wrong, but..." before launching into his spiel.

I love this on so many levels. First of all, it immediately disarms the other person and helps them to feel more open to your opinion. It can also act as a good reminder for yourself to soften into the situation and remember that there are always two sides to every story.

By opening the conversation with this line, it really sets up the conversation to be more inclusive of other's opinions and reminds everyone to stay open to new information.

I discuss in more detail in the video and I'd love to hear your thoughts on this! I love using these mini-vlogs as a way to spark discussion or conversation. Is this something that you think would be valuable to try? If it is something you are already doing - i'd love to hear how it went!

I could be wrong, but this seems like a good idea to me. (Sorry guys... I had to!)

I look forward to chatting with you all below!

XO, Lea

I love this! I’m totally going to use this. I could be right, but I think it would be wrong to use I could be wrong as a reply here

haha! That's a bit of a tongue twister. Glad you enjoyed this video!

Yeah i was hoping you would know what I meant by that because I didnt lol

Now you are talking founding fathers?! Damn girl, stop hitting so many high marks lol +points

Hahah thanks @zainenn! 😊

I could be wrong, but...you are awesome.

Hahah well played @sabari18!! and thank you. :)

Benjamin Franklin is a key contributor to a lot of great events in United States history. However, the man thought our national bird should have been the turkey. I could be wrong but....slaughtering our own national bird every Thanksgiving seems to be poor taste.

bahahah I totally forgot about that fact. Yeah... that wouldn't have gone over so well around the Thanksgiving table. ;)

Gotta disarm before you can dismember ;)

hahah I guess that's one way of lookin' at it!

I could be wrong, but that sounds like superb advice.

Someone who agrees with you will think you are modest and likeable, while someone who disagrees with you won't classify you as an enemy.

After all, if you could be wrong, then there's a chance you could agree with them. So they'll want to carry on talking.

I could be wrong, but saying "I could be wrong" could be the smartest conversational tactic in the world, especially when talking to new people, whose opinions you don't yet know. :)

oooh good point about using it to feel out situations with meeting new people! I'm glad you enjoyed this video. Thanks for adding to the conversation!

I prefer the alternative; I start with the presumption that I am infallible but not necessarily.

As in : "Here's your answer, although contrary to popular opinions, I have made mistakes before"

That's a fun way to say it! Still gets your point across, but in a little different way.

In my opinion too many stupid people are too noisy in promoting their opinions so IT should be more:

you are wrong and i will tel You why

Because if the toughful like you step back too many times we will be ruled by Idiots.

I could ne wrong is too defensive in my view

I could be wrong, but if you tell someone "you are wrong" they will not listen to another word you say lol.

Sorry @felix.herrmann... but i'm with @rodneysreviews on this one!! If someone came in hot saying I was wrong... i wouldn't be very keen on chatting with them more after that.

Sure but i used this technique for 3 years online. But you cant crush Filter bubbles. Even though you are right people rather block you.

Just telling someone they are wrong is not enough... if you can't add the "because of X" to the end, then it is counter productive to the discussion, even if the criticism is accurate.

You make a good point about not letting yourself get run over by idiots. I honestly don't give a lot of these people the time of day anyway. If i'm using this "I could be wrong" method - it is probably with someone that I have respect for and am genuinely interested in hearing their thoughts.

Yeah - i care About my grandpa. But He is too old to be convinced. He still thinks the Internet will go away.

Too late at night , just gave you upvote , because you are :)
