Prey with Ease

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

There are quite a few pieces of art and sculpture scattered around the streets of historic downtown Wilmington, North Carolina. In this post, I'd like to share some captures of an interesting sculpture that I photographed on my last visit.

It's located right on the Cape Fear River walk, and actually, right next to the Riverboat Landing Restaurant & Bar that I highlighted in yesterday's @steemit post entitled:

Steemit ☛ @cognoscere: Taking a break and making a break for it ...

This sculpture is entitled Prey with Ease and was created by local Wilmington artist Paul Hill.

It consists of metal, stained glass, and wood and features an owl in flight with its talons preparing for an "easy" catch of a tasty meal. Owls rely on sight and sound to locate their prey, with their strong and sharp talons and beak providing the death blow to its unlucky victim!

The red, blue, and purple stained glass serves to reflect the sun and moon light and the whole circular structure of this sculpture can rotate somewhat in the breeze. In this way, this sculpture is meant to interact with the environment to enhance it's beauty.

BTW, here's a @steemit post from several months ago where I shared another one of Paul Hill's sculptures, although I didn't realize it at the time.

This is Paul's 2014 sculpture entitled "Southern Hospitality"

Paul Hill's Biography:
Paul Hill is a metal sculptor and painter. He was born in Tyler, Texas. Paul's family moved to Ohio, where he received his secondary education. After high school, Paul studied Fine Art & Design at Kent State University from 1966 - 1974. The untimely school delay was due to Military service from 1967 - 1971 during the Vietnam War. From 1975 through 1985, Paul worked in various Advertising Agencies as Art Director and Creative Director for National Clients such as Firestone Tire, Alcoa Aluminum and the like. Paul became more interested in working for himself as his desire to paint and sculpt became an overwhelming desire to express his own artistic vision.

Beginning in the early 90's, Paul put down his brush and picked up a torch. His steel and mixed media sculptures are now seen in numerous Corporate, Residential and Public Works of Art. Paul's work can be found up and down the Eastern Seaboard Coast. He has work permanently displayed at the North Carolina Veteran's Park, Fayetteville, North Carolina; Won Best in Show at the Cary Visual Arts National Sculpture Competition, Cary, North Carolina; Biennial Sculpture Show, Chattanooga, Tennessee; Detroit Diesel, MTU; Detroit, Michigan. Paul's current work is involved with the use of representational animal imagery which depicts the unpredictable human emotions and frustrations, that are daily being thrust into the lives of every person.

Hill's work can be seen in myriad of public and private art collections all along the eastern coast. Paul currently lives and works in Wilmington, North Carolina.

I love this historical series.

Old Wilmington, North Carolina is steeped in history and makes it a priority to showcase it well. It reminds me of other great historical southern towns I've visited like Charleston, South Carolina and also New Orleans, Louisiana.

The pictures are very beautiful and interesting, let alone you are able to publish it also the history of the sculptors themselves, it is very extraordinary you. Then the way and the shooting technique that you do really very professional, not everyone can do it. Success always for you, keep working.

Thanks for stopping by @husaini!!!

K I just looked at this from all the angles and I can't really tell where the owl is attached, it looks like it's just floating in mid air. Amazing. Thanks!

Thanks for the kind words @terrapinaj!!!

The owl is attached to the circular frame at one point on the owl's right wing. You can see it better in some of these images I found on the web:
