Grist Mills - surprise stop on a cold day

in #photography4 years ago (edited)

Hi fellow Steemians,

Yesterday we went Black Friday shopping, though not the same kind that most were doing. My wife and I got anniversary rings from one of the local discount jewelers, something we’ve been meaning to do for a while but finally did. Ours is the wood anniversary (?, never heard of different elements lol but apparently others classify them, strange),so we wanted to complete her ring combo. We both aren’t flashy people except for our wedding rings. We picked me up a nice tungsten one!

We were wasting time driving around doing lots of turns around and stumbled upon this beautiful historical site! Par for the course living in the Boston area I guess but needless, it was beautiful! We very sadly forgot our nice DSLR camera but the iPhone cameras are decent enough to get the job done.

We had seen the sign for it on the main road, except it only said wayside inn so we weren’t really interested given it was 38 degrees, 25 with the windchill. I’m not a literature buff but the famous Boston poet Henry Longfellow has written a series of poems about the area now that I look it up, interesting to some I suppose! The scenery is what drew us in.

This old mill and water wheel were incredible!

The building was pretty big, surprisingly.

As with any Boston area site, there’s quite a bit of history surrounding it.

The grinding stones were massive, and everywhere.

There were some great little foot bridges everywhere for us to get some great pictures from.

We had reached the bottom of the hill and found the beautiful stream that combined with the water wheel runoff.

There were some cool underground buildings like this one, probably an old root cellar.

The surrounding area was pretty awesome as well, with an old barn that unfortunately had quite a bit of graffiti on it.

Despite the bone chilling temperatures, it was an incredible find. We are definitely going back in the spring when it’s not insanely cold. We will also be sporting our camera as well, to take some even better images!

Looks like a pretty cool place. I've heard good things about Boston and surrounds and wouldn't mind a visit someday. I like a bit of history so that mill would interest me.

Tungsten rings are the best. I have a silver one as my wedding ring which I bought for $25 to replace the original gold one as I liked the look better. Never scratches or tarnishes no matter what I throw at it. Like you, it's the only jewelry I wear.

There’s a boat load of cool places outside of the city itself, and outside of the mainstream areas too (Salem, Lexington etc., too touristy for my taste). If you ever do make the journey, I can tell you several places that are worth it! I’m going to do a post about another awesome site in the coming weeks, just have to take photos of it. We discovered it a few weeks ago and never knew about it despite living here for 6 years!

I love my new tungsten ring. It’s really cool but not expensive. My wife and I both wore engagement rings, my engagement one from her was titanium which was cool, then my wedding band was titanium as well with a wood-look inlay. I like them all and they will serve their individual uses like the engagement ring I wear when I’m working on the cars or on things to fix up the house so I don’t get the nice ones scratched.

There's so many places I need to see and visit and I'm not sure I'll get to them. America will be difficult as there's so much to see, it's so big. We haven't been yet but will definitely do it. I'll look out for your post.

Me when anyone I know goes shopping on Black Friday

Hahah we got good prices trust me, my wife has a heart attack spending over 200$ on 99% of things. My ring was 40! Hers was 220, not bad at all lol

We didn’t bother going to those overpriced stores, so foolish lol
