We're really doing this!

My name is Tara. I'm the behind the scenes gal at our little home. I love drinking coffee out on the deck. 20170526_170121.jpgFor the last five or six years my husband and i have dreamed about "our homestead". Two years ago we bought our place, and since then, little by little, we're building up to homestead.
We've got four children. Their ages range from 18 down to 3. And animal wise, we started with a dog. Then added a cat. Then came the chickens. And this spring we've added kittens, another dog, a turkey and four goats!
We homeschool, I sew, I cook most of our food from scratch. We're learning how to be self reliant. We love tips and hints from outside sources!
That's about it for now. Oh, I normally do not carry the chickens around like children!
Thanks for taking the time to read this. In the future I may post about sewing, or bread making, or our cute little goats. You may also find posts from my husband @goatgarden.

Welcome on board from south of you :)

Welcome to Steem it!! Enjoy the community!!

Hi nice to meet you. If you get a rooster for your chickens you will have more chickens.

Hi! We do have two roosters, Zebra and Carl (named by the kids). We've hatched a few chicks last year, but we didn't seperate the broody hen with them, and the chicks didn't survive. We just started marking eggs yesterday- so we know which to leave in the nesting box and which to bring in to the kitchen- and we're going to try again.
Have you raised chicks from eggs? Do you have some pointers for me? We read a lot to try to learn how to do things, but some things are just trial and error. So, i think what we'll do this time (and anyone! Please chime in with words of wisdom! ) We'll let the broody hen sit on the eggs, then when they're ready to hatch we'll move them (eggs and hen)to another coop to let them hatch and grow up a little there first. Then maybe introduce them to the flock when they're a little older and can hold their own.
But yes! We want to have a reproducing flock. :)

Welcome to steemit! You and your chickens will love it here. Have fun, upvoted and hope u follow me.

I am following you. Very creative use of spam. Does it really taste good?

Oh yeah. Very easy to make to. Its popular in hawaii

Welcome to steemit. Hope you enjoy it

A big Steemit welcome Tara and a quick question; do you make your coffee from fresh beans? I'm an Englishman and have been drinking tea the majority of my life but as I'm living in the Netherlands now, which is a coffee drinking nation, I'm now doing what I thought I never would do and drink coffee, daily! I'm really interested in upgrading from coffee pads to the real thing? Upvoted and Followed.

Thank you, and hello! Normally I buy ground coffee and brew from that, but we have purchased green coffee beans online and roasted them in an air popcorn popper, then ground them and brewed. It is very good!
I have been a coffee drinker since 6 years old, and i always drank it with cream and sugar. But about three years ago i switched to black coffee. I think i drink too much, so I've started drinking hot green tea or earl gray through the day when a coffee craving hits.
We have a Bunn coffee maker which can brew a pot in 3 minutes, and we also have a French press that you put the grounds in, then pour boiling water over and let brew a bit. It only does about 3 cups at a time. Still a very nice result.
Thank you for asking! Nice to "meet" you.

Thank you for such a detailed a reply and great advice too. I'm quite new to the whole coffee world but I definitely see your point of not drinking too much, it gives you such a kick to your day and if you're kicking all day, you end up bouncing off the walls. It's a pleasure to meet you and thanks again. :-)

Welcome Tara! I can't wait to read about your family's homesteading adventures! We homeschool as well, and have lived on our farm for fifteen years. It's always an adventure but we love it! I also see that you fell for the "goats are like a potato chip, you can never have just one" trap, lol! Followed you both. 😊

Thank you! I'm following you as well. I can't wait to see about your outdoor oven. @goatgarden has that on his wish/to do list.

It was on our to do list forever! I can't wait to read about and see your family's oven when you build it!

Welcome aboard! Check out @papa-pepper and @generikat for other homesteading Steemians!

Thank you! Will do. And i just dropped by your page and am now a follower.
