Home Tips #6 – Home Sweet Home!
FRUIT FLIES:
See which of these recipes/options works best for you.
You will need:
• A mason jar with a lid
• or use a piece of paper rolled into a funnel and secured with a small piece of tape to keep
the shape
• Alternatively, a piece of plastic wrap and a rubber band.
• A toothpick or something similar to make holes in the plastic
Option 1:
• 1 Tsp. dried yeast
• ¼ cup of water
• A pinch of sugar
Option 2:
• Fill the jar ½ full with apple cider vinegar.
• Add a few drops of dishwashing liquid.
• Swirl it to break the surface tension.
Option 3:
• Fill the jar ½ full with beer.
• Add a few drops of dishwashing liquid.
• Swirl it to break the surface tension.
Once the fruit flies are in the jar, we need to make sure they don‘t escape. If you are using a glass jar without a lid, insert the paper funnel into the jar and place the jar near your fruit. Alternatively, put the plastic wrap over the opening and secure it with a rubber band. Poke holes in the plastic just large enough for the flies to enter. If you are using a mason jar, you can put the plastic wrap over the opening and hold it in place by screwing on the band. Don‘t forget to poke holes in the plastic, just large enough for the flies to enter. Place the jar near your fruit bowl or wherever needed.
FRYING PAN CLEANER
If you burned your food and your frying pan has a thick black layer on the bottom there is a quick and easy way to clean it. Follow the instructions below and this should leave your pan or pot as good new.
• Cover the bottom of the frying pan with salt.
• Add about ½ liter of water
• Boil the water for about 10 minutes.
GAS
Detecting a gas leak can be tricky as well as dangerous. Make a strong soap solution with lots of foam and paint it on the suspected fittings or length of pipe. Bubbles will form where the gas is leaking, and now it can be repaired.

Great tips once again, @claudiaz! Do you have one that would work with regular house flies?
I am sure I do I will check and get back to you
Thank you so much! I have two of them who have been hanging around my computer monitor for the last couple of days and are really annoying!
Fruit flies in the kitchen around the fruit (funnily enough...) is really a problem for us during the warmer months! We've just let them hang around, but I might try this remedy out!
they are rather pesty, and this works well @bengy
I didn't know the one about adding salt to a burnt pan. I'll have to try that next time I burn my dinner. :-) I used to work at a restaurant where we used ice and vinegar to clean our flat top grill. That worked like magic!
