What a red sky! A sad reason for the blood red sky – 하늘이 빨간건 슬픈거다.

Have you seen a red sky lately? When the sun rises and sets you may see a slightly reddish or orange colored sky. Have you ever seen a truly blood red colored sky? I saw this real red sky a few months ago. I was really surprised at how red the sky was. I took pictures of this red sky around East LA where it is quite far from the sea. When I drove back towards West LA it felt like I was heading towards a burning inferno. Honestly, I was a little bit scared. Also, it reminded me of the movie, ‘MAD MAX : Fury road’ and it also reminded me of the ‘Revelation of St. John’.

Do you know why the sky turns to this bloody red color? The reason is nothing to be happy about. I'll explain briefly.

붉은 하늘을 보신 적 있으신가요? 물론 석양이 질때나, 해가 떠오를때 보신적 있으시겠지만 하늘을 뒤덮은 진짜 빨간 하늘은 어떠신가요? 몇달전에 그런 하늘을 보았는데 바다와 가까운 곳도 아니었어서 더 놀란 적이 있어요. 조금 무서웠습니다. 왜냐면 Mad Max 가 떠오르기도 하고 요한계시록이 생각났거든요.

여러분은 하늘이 왜 이토록 붉은지 알고 계시나요? 저에게는 의외인 답을 듣게 되었는데 간단히 설명해 드릴게요.

The colors of the sky is a result from the sunlight interacting with molecules in the air (nitrogen, oxygen, CO2, etc). All of the wavelengths of light are scattered by these substances, but they are not scattered equally because the color blue has shorter wavelengths than red or yellow colors.

As the sun edges toward the horizon, the light must travel increasingly longer paths and blue is more easily scattered by more air molecules than the red ones by the time it reaches our eyes. Thus, what remains are the warmer hues of red, orange and yellow, which blend into a yellowish-orange sunset.

On that note, a lot of molecules scatter the blue wavelengths more, which results in us seeing a red colored sky. Some meteorologists say "It is certainly true that the 'pollution' results in redder sunsets."

모든 빛의 파장은 이 공기속 물질들에 의해서 흩어지는게 되는데, 이때 모든 빛이 일정하게 흩어지지는 않는다고 합니다. 파란 계통의 색은 붉고 노란 색들에 비해 파장이 짧습니다. 해가 수평선에 걸릴때, 빛의 거리는 낮보다 더 길어지게 되고, 빛이 우리 눈에 도달하기 전 파란빛은 더 많은 공기 속 분자들에 의해 흩어지게 됩니다.

그래서 결국 우리는 파란색이 사라지고 남은 따뜻한 온도의 색, 즉 노란색, 주황색 그리고 빨간색을 보게 됩니다. 즉, 공기중 분자들이 많을수록 푸른빛의 파장은 더 흩어지게 되고 하늘은 더 붉게 보이게 되는 거지요. 그래서 학자들은 ‘붉은 하늘은 대기오염의 결과다’ 라고 말할 수 있다고 합니다.

Yesterday, I saw a reddish sky again. I was a little bit scared because this is the result of ‘pollution’. Also, I was wondering what the real color of the sunset would be like without this kind of pollution. Although these views is a sad result of pollution it was yet an amazing view of the sky.

어제 다시 붉은 하늘을 보았습니다. 이유를 알고나니 좀 무섭다는 생각이 들더군요. 그리고 그럼 오염없는 하늘의 진짜 석양색은 무엇일지도 궁금해졌어요. 그 색을 앞으로 볼 수는 없겠지만요. 뭔가 더 슬픈 하늘처럼 보이지만, 그래도 눈 앞에 펼쳐진 붉은 빛이 구름에 물든 모습은 장관이긴 하네요.
