Summary of Animal Farm by George Orwell - Chapter 2

Three nights after major told his dream, he died peacefully in his sleep. His body was buried at the foot of the orchard. This was early in March. The animals did not know when the predicted rebellion would take place, they didn't even think that it would be within their own lifetime but had to prepare for it. The pigs were the cleverest animal in the farm and had no option but to teach and organize the others. Most important among the pigs were two young boars named Snowball and Napoleon. Napoleon wasn't much of a talker but snowball was quicker in speech and more inventive. There was also Squealer who is a small fat pig. Squealer was also clever and had his way to persuade people to believe that black is white. It happened that several nights in a week, after Mr Jones slept off, they held secret meetings in the barn in which the three pigs expounded the precepts of animalism to the others. It wasn't easy for the pigs, especially to counteract the lies put about by Moses, the tame raven. Moses who was a spy and a clever talker was also Mr Jones special pet. June came and the hay was almost ready to be cut. On Saturday which was midsummer's eve, Mr Jones got very drunk and couldn't come back till midday on Sunday. Mr Jones men didn't feed the animals and went out rabbiting. Mr Jones came back and went to sleep while the animals were still unfed. The animals soon lost their patience and broke the door as all of them helped themselves from the bins. Just then, Mr Jones woke up. With whips in the hands of Jones and his men, they were lashing out in all directions. The hungry animals couldn't bear it anymore so they flung themselves on their tormentors. When Jones and his men saw that they were losing, they were in flight down to the main road while the animals pursued them triumphantly. Mrs Jones who saw what was happening took some of their properties and slipped out of the farmhouse. Before the animals knew it, the foretold rebellion had been carried out with ease; the manor farm was theirs. Some of the tools which were used against them were flung down the well while the others were burnt. Including the whips. The next day, they went into Mr Jones house but didn't touch anything. The pigs also revealed that they had taught themselves how to read and write from an old spelling book which has belonged to Mr Jones's children. Using this new knowledge of theirs, the 7 commandments were created and written on the walls.

The Seven Commandments

  1. Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy
  2. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend
  3. No animal shall wear clothes
  4. No animal shall sleep in a bed
  5. No animal shall drink alcohol
  6. No animal shall kill any other animal
  7. All animals are equal.
