Day After (Short Fiction)
This is a story about what happened a day after the governorship election. Everything is fiction. Story is set in Nigeria. I'm toying with multiple dialogues.
Enjoy!
Police Headquarters, Abuja. 8:23AM
Emem's walkie-talkie buzzed noisily. She dropped the file she was going through and snatched it up.
"Emem here," she spoke into the radio.
"My office, now!" the voice bellowed.
She muttered something incomprehensible and stood.
"Trouble in paradise?" her partner, Michael asked.
She ignored him and took the stairs two at a time.
"You sent for me Chief," she said, as she stepped into the large office.
"Yes, Detective. I'm sure you saw the news."
"About the Senator's daughter?"
"Yes. She was shot last night by a group of boys and we have information that they're planning a riot. I want you to make sure it never happens, and bring them to me."
"Yes Chief."
Area Three Junction.
Four boys sat round a battered table under the bridge. The biggest among them was counting crisp hundred naira notes. He finished and shared it into four equal parts.
"The big party rigged our election," he said, handing out the notes. "Our instruction is to burn down their party building and INEC office."
"Election is over. We did our part by printing multiple voter's card. Our job here is finished," one of the boys said, blowing smoke rings.
"This is not a game Tobi. We do as we're told, no questions. Understood?"
Others nodded. Tobi shrugged and blew more rings.
National Secretariat.
The atmosphere was tensed. The Senator paced up and down the large office.
"This is what I get in return for supporting you?" he shouted. "My daughter is fighting for her life as we speak. She isn't a part of this."
"Please calm down,," the Governor pleaded. "Your daughter will be fine."
"You make sure of that, Your Excellency," he stormed out.
INEC Office.
Protestants blocked the entrance. Coloured placards swayed in the air.
"I see him," Emem spoke into her radio. "Black shirt, red trousers, gasoline in hand, your 9 o'clock. Tail him while I evacuate the building."
"Copy," Michael confirmed.
Emem jumped down from the car and ran towards the entrance.
"Everybody out. Police. Out now!" she yelled.
Pandemonium broke. Fire creaked from the roof.
"Michael, you there?"
"Got him. Fire service on the way."
Chief of Police's Office. 10:40PM
"We just rounded up the remaining three boys" Emem said. "The Senator's daughter lives. Newly elected Governor to address the general public tomorrow."
"Congratulations, Detective," Chief nodded. "You just got promoted."
Emem looked at Michael and grinned.
