Why Steem Leo Interface Matters For Growth: Canonicalization

A couple weeks ago a found a post by @pennsif which was an interview show. It was the first I'd heard of this and I learned a ton.

On it he interviewed @aggroed , the founder of steem-engine and @khaleelkazi , the founder of @steem.leo . Both interviews really changed the way I viewed things here on @steemit and got me thinking about why I had originally gotten involved here in the first place.

Without boring you to death, I came here in the summer of 2017 strictly for the SEO value I perceived steemit.com would have for my seo clients and personal online businesses of which I had 4 at the time.

I was right about that but quickly realized that I liked steem as crypto. One of the main problems with Steemit for seo is something called "duplicate content" . In a nutshell, it just means that having your exact content appearing on every steem interface is not good and won't help your google rankings.

Technically if you link out to a website from your steemit blog you would want that content only showing up on Steemit.com because of the domain power that yields. There are some other things to know about that but that is or another post.

The cool thing is that @khaleelkazi pointed out during that interview that with tribes, Steemit honors something called for Canonicalization . What that means is that steemit has the technical capability to unhook their position as first publisher of that content and defers to the tribe website.

So what does that mean for @steem.leo and what @khaleelkazi was really talking about?

It means that posting your content directly from https://www.steemleo.com instead of another interface has the power of being it's own powerful website and will provide a unique link to content mentioned in articles.

Why that benefits the community has to do with their work on growing @steem.leo as a separate entity from Steemit and providing benefits to new members in their "niche" space. We can talk more about that another time because it's pretty cool.

A secret benefit of this whole thing and what I learned from the interview from @pennsif is that if you post content from https://www.steemleo.com instead of another interface that the @leo.voter account will give you an upvote giving you free steem and leo. I don't believe that has been officially announced yet so if you have read this far, now you know lol.

I would recommend following @pennsif , @aggroed and @khaleelkazi . You will learn a lot from these accounts just like I have.

@wiseteam or something like that is trying to build a blog on top of steem engrave.website. I know @enjar had an issue similar to what you were talking about.

He couldn't build the engrave blog because the steemit page outranked it and would kick it to the bottom of search results in favor of his steemit articles.

Not sure if this is 100% what you were referring to but it would be nice if @engrave could do something similar for those that use it to help build their SEO rankings outside of Steemit for their content.

This is not that easy. We're doing our best with SEO optimized themes. Steemit has an older domain with much more SEO power but we're getting better and better in search results. Currently, SteemLeo is not adding any additional information about canonical links. And to make it really matter, all Steem frontends should respect that links and I bet it's not going to happen in the near future.
