Meet our new family pet! [Unusual Crafts episode 2 - BONE GOLEM]

in #art5 years ago

This cute lil' guy just showed up at our back door on Halloween night. We figured it would be the perfect thing to scare the crap out of trick-or-treaters so we let it stick around :)

In today's episode of Unusual Crafts your favorite tentacle monster makes a pet bone golem.

I have mentioned how many bones we find while hiking around the mountainsides on deer trails since we moved to Utah. Being the kind of family that we are, we often bring bones back with us to add to a growing collection. Skulls of course we bring back, but also vertebrae, leg bones, scapula, pelvises (pelvi?), and more have found their way into the bone pile.

We started asking ourselves what we were going to do with all these bones, and I decided to craft a bone golem greeter to go outside our door on Halloween.

Getting started - some sorted bones and tools of the bone golem trade

My initial plan was to use my electric drill to drill holes in the bones, but it turns out bone is really hard! I am sure I could have done it with a special drill bit but the normal drill bits I had for wood and cinder block were not cutting it. So I went with wire wrapping.

Per my usual modus operandi I didn't plan this out in advance, I just started wiring bones together and figured eventually they would start looking like something

This is the first thing I put together, I initially thought this might end up being the head of the creature but after I decided to just use a deer skull this became the chest/neck region that the skull attached to on the finished golem.

Then I started wiring vertebrae together to make a spine; in addition to deer vertebrae I think some of these are elk and the largest ones pictured here and above are cow I believe

Starting to look like something!

This is where I called it quits the first night working on the project (the night before Halloween). It was COLD out (way below freezing, with a wind chill on top of that) and the sun was about to set. The sun setting on the snow covered mountains in our back yard is really a beautiful view:

Picking it back up on Halloween afternoon I decided the creature would have six legs.

Finished up just in time to round out our Halloween decor in the front yard.

I do think it is cute in a kinda freaky sorta way.

Close-up of the tail - I think using a deer scapula as the tail/fin was one of my better design decisions :)
