The fourth day of my trip to the coffee growing regions of Brazil - with me @c0ff33a ☕️steemCreated with Sketch.

Today we visited Monte Alegre Coffee with 2200 hectares of coffee plantation, containing 8 million coffee plants they are one of the largest single coffee producers in Brazil. Above you can see one of the manual coffee pickers clearing leaves and twigs from his picked coffee cherries before adding them to his sack - to do this he literally tosses the berries with this large circular mesh - and then catches them perfectly again. The farm utilises Mechanical picking where the land topography allows, but some areas are just too hilly or uneven to use the machines - and instead workers are employed to hand pick the coffee from the trees.

IMG_1807.JPG

Each worker is paid a set minimum wage, this then increases based on the volume of crop they pick during the day. Here one of the pickers is having his volume measured and recorded by a foreman, before it then goes into the large sack which will be emptied into a trailer later for transport to processing.

IMG_1865.JPG

Processing is a very slick operation, utilising the natural land slope the picked coffee cherries are tipped into the silos, and then will be processed through equipment downslope progressing eventually to the bottom where there are drying machines and storage silos.

IMG_1905.JPG

Here the cherries have been sorted already, but they will be sorted again - the dark cherries that have dried on the tree will be processed one way, the red ones a different way - the yellow and light green another way again.

IMG_1898.JPG

Here the drying coffee beans laid out on the drying patios are being turned by a modified motorcycle - the coffee needs regular turning so it dries evenly and does not over ferment.

IMG_1782.JPG

After seeing the processing plant, we went to the quality control labs and cupped some of the coffee's. With cupping you detect all the flavours the coffee has - you do not drink the coffee - you slurp it off the spoon into your mouth making a ssshhh noise as you try and cover you palette to detect the subtle flavours.

IMG_1977.JPG

Finally we were taken back to the family home to share a meal with them and watch the sun set, this historic building can be seen back in 1917 when the family took over the plantation on Monte Alegre about us and today it still plays an important part of the business.

IMG_1992.JPG

A fabulous sunset to end the day, because it is winter in Brazil the sun set's very early at around 5.30pm

Today we spent more time indoors cupping coffee and having a presentation on the process Monte Allegre use. Then we were driven around the coffee plantation and processing facility - because they are so large it is not possible to walk.

The greatest challenge we face on Steemit is getting our posts seen, I have always believed the simplest and best value way of doing this is by commenting on the blog posts of others, the more you engage people and interact with them the greater the chance they will visit your own blog and return the favour. Other then spending all my free time commenting on Steemit posts, I also distribute coffee roasting machines and also espresso coffee machines and roast my own Speciality Coffee Range. being one of the premium coffee suppliers Yorkshire including a wide range of filter coffee sachets

What a fun field trip! Fascinating process you’ve laid out here, from start to finish. Impressive post. Enjoy the rest of your trip!

Thank you very much, it’s been an intense few days with a busy schedule to visit plantations and five hour journeys in a mini bus between them. I’m taking so many photos - but internet signal is not great here and even WiFi at the hotel takes forever to upload photos.

Am sooo jealous!

Such an adventure you are having with them coffee plantations and tasting!

Truly enjoy checking the updates from Brazil

How hot is Brazil btw?

Thank you very much, it is winter in Brazil but still hotter then a UK summer! It’s around twenty two degrees celcius and sunny enough to get burned even with sun cream on!

It must be so delightful for you to be in this place. The sunset is gorgeous, perfect way to wind up the day 💖

Thank you very much, it has been amazing following the coffee process all the way from seedlings to the coffee beans being sample roasted and checked for quality.

Wow!!!! What a coffee adventure!!!! Hehe what flavors did you detect when you were shooooshing lol...did you get them all? 😃

Posted using Partiko Android

Thank you very much, I did not get all the flavours in the cupping - but they are all delicious coffee! Most were this years crop and the green coffee needs to rest a few more months before it will be fully ready to roast and consume.

Mmmmmm do you get to bring lots home?

Posted using Partiko Android

I’m not planning on carrying the coffee home in my luggage, but for example Bruno de Souza who owned the first farm I visited - I will purchase maybe 400kg of his farm’s production of green coffee this year to roast and sell - but it will be shipped with other orders he has from European roasters.

It surely is a place with visiting, I have an on coffee crops, but none as big as the one you shared with us.

Thank you very much, they are very big coffee trees here - so you grow a little coffee yourself?

Posted using Partiko iOS

No by myself, a friend's father has a small yard where he grows coffee for personal consume 🙂

Howdy again sir c0ff33a! This is such an interesting series of posts, I had no idea what the process was like! Great job.

Thank you very much, it’s an incredible journey from a coffee plant seedling to actually drinking a cup of coffee - and so many people along the chain are dependant on coffer to earn a living.

Howdy sir c0ff33a! It is so remarkable to see the entire process and what it takes to bring us the finished product, I'll never complain about prices again!
