Best bedding for Chickens? 🐓

in #homesteading7 years ago

Even as today's weather is balmy and we are outside in t-shirts, the impending winter weather weighs heavily on our minds.
This of course has us discussing our options for winter bedding in the coop.

In previous years we have used straw exclusively. Over all we have been satisfied with the results, however......

.....in the picture above you can see a green tarp on the right hand side covering our last two bales of straw.
Typically we use somewhere between 15 and 20 bales throughout the course of a year.

One of the problems we face is that we can only get straw around this time of year which means we end up purchasing all that we'll need and this creates a storage problem.
We usually fill the entire lobby section of the barn with straw, then, whatever won't fit will be put under the poop boards in the sleeping area.

One of the reasons we use so much is that half of the barn has a dirt floor which, although providing many benefits for us and the birds requires frequent topping off.

So rather than purchase a years supply of straw, we have been discussing using wood shavings. They are comparable in price, we can get them locally and, they are available year round which eliminates the need for storage.

So, what are your thoughts? What do you use? Is there something else we should consider?
Thanks for your input and happy Homesteading!

Love your coop! I live in warm climes so most times mine free range, but when I want to breed or coop them up for any reason, I use shavings. We don't have straw readily available so it's either hay or shavings. Your hens look great :)

Thanks for your input, and thanks for taking a look. You are a appreciated!

I dont have an answer but I would like some options too! Resteemed.

Sorry, I won't be much help, my only experience with chickens were on my uncles farm and he used straw. I wish you a Happy Canadian Thanksgiving!

No worries Brother, and many thanks!

We used to use fresh straw in the boxes, changed regularly - they would hop in and lay happily, mind you as soon as the door opened off for a dust bath.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this, much appreciated.

Thank you and your welcome, I miss the Hens, Ducks and Geese we had when I was a boy.

It's never to late to get back into it!

Very true, very tying if travelling a lot, away from home a lot, simething to consider later, thank you -

Creo que el uso de virutas de madera es la mejor opción, estimado @brimax. :)

Gracias por compartir sus pensamientos sobre esto!

We have used the wood shavings on several occasions and found that they work very well. Great if you have a storage problem . 🐓🐓

I think we are going to give the wood shavings a shot this winter. We'll do an update for anyone else in the same situation. Thanks or your input!
