Ulog: Camping with Bozz: Cheboygan, MI

in #travelfeed6 years ago

Typically when my wife and I camp, we have a pretty set routine for the day we leave. I work a half day and then come home to get the trailer hooked up and we head out.

This trip started anything but typical though. First of all, we were taking one of my nephews camping this time. His excitement was off the charts! You would have thought he was going to Disney World or something.

It was cool to see him so excited to do something my wife and I love with us though. Our friends that we usually camp with have a son about his age and they always have a great time playing together.

Like any other trip, I got the trailer hooked up to the truck and started to pull out of the driveway. I stopped on the road to adjust my towing mirrors a little and noticed that there was a black cord hanging from the trailer.

I am sorry I didn't get a picture of it, but I immediately knew I had snagged the cable TV line with the trailer and torn it out all the way from the house to the pole.

I quickly jumped out of the truck and ran back to the trailer. I climbed on the roof and removed the cabling that wrapped around some of the equipment on the top. I then bundled the 100 or so meters of cable in my driveway and we left.

My wife called the cable company and they said they could send someone out the next day to fix it even though we wouldn't be home.

We told them we kept the trailer on that side of the driveway and asked if they could install it higher this time and they said no problem.

After a pretty uneventful drive North, we reached Cheboygan about two and a half hours later. Pulling the trailer takes quite a toll on my gas mileage and even though I had a full tank when we left, the truck was just about empty when we pulled in to the campground.

Cheyboygan State Park is a huge recreation area just outside the small town of Cheboygan, MI. When you enter the park off the main road, you are immediately given the option of going left to the beach or right towards the campground.

If you choose right, the campground is another two to three miles back in the woods. The campground itself is fairly small with only 75 sites. There is only one modern bathhouse with showers and all of the campsites have 20 amp electrical service.

The 20 amp service is important to note because one of the days we camped, it got up to 114 degrees. Many campers were running the A/C in their trailers and the electrical grid just couldn't handle it like 30 amp service would. Half of the campground ended up being without power for part of a day while we waited for them to reset the system.

Most of the campsites are surrounded by cypress trees and are pretty secluded. This gave our dog plenty of opportunity to watch the chipmunks and squirrels skitter around. The picture above was taken while she was watching a chipmunk. She stayed that still for close to 15 minutes just watching it go here and there.

In addition to the camping sites and a couple of cabins that you can rent, the campground also has tepee's that you can rent out.

I sent our friends daughter on a mission to get some pictures of the inside of the tepee and I plan on doing a separate post on that tomorrow or Thursday.

I hope you come back to see what it is like on the inside.

There was a little path at the back of our campsite that led down to Duncan Bay. There isn't much of a beach in this area of the bay because they want you to use the main beach area back at the entrance to the park. I was able to get some nice pictures that I will share at the end of this post though.

As I mentioned before, we took one of our nephews camping with us. We got a pretty significant rain the first night we were there and knowing he had never really camped before, we kind of laughed when he said it was raining inside the trailer.

We figured he had just heard all the noise from the rain and thought it was inside and not outside. Imagine our surprise though when we got up and found out that indeed there was a leak in the trailer! Most of the floor was wet as well as the dinette area. We quickly had to get everything dried up and figure out what was going on.

I can't be sure, but I think the slide unit on the side of our trailer wasn't out all the way, so the seal wasn't tight and it allowed rain water to seep into the trailer. We put a fan on the cushions that got wet and by the end of the day, things were back to normal.

During the days we camped, my wife and her friend took the kids to the beach while I lounged in the shade and took naps with our dog.

One of her favorite spots is under the trailer where it is shady and the ground is cool. We don't really mind because she gets a bath as soon as we get home from each trip.

You can just make her out behind the broom in the picture here. As I said, it was pretty hot while we were there, so we were all trying to stay as cool as possible. Thankfully being so close to the water there was usually a nice breeze.

In the evenings we had fires and sat around laughing and talking about life. Unlike the last place we stayed at, this was a State Park, so there was much more noise, laughter, and conversation happening in the park.

The first two nights were pretty cloudy, so it was hard to get some good pictures of the sunset.

By the third night though, the clouds had started to move off and I was able to take a stroll down to the waters edge to get some shots.

I decided to try some different settings on my cell phone to see if I could find the best way to capture the colors. Take a look at the pictures below and let me know which one(s) you like!

We arrived home to find that the cable company had indeed gotten us back up and running. I was happy to see that they moved the new drop up a good foot or so higher than it had been. We shouldn't have to worry about taking out our cable line any more.

We got some rain the other day so as soon as I got home from work I went into the trailer to make sure it wasn't leaking and again I was happy to see that it was dry as can be. In the future we will need to be extra careful to make sure that the slide is all the way out.

All pictures are my own. Thanks for reading!

Wow - the first sunset photo is amazing! I initially thought it was an explosion.
I've just done my first camping trip in about 10 years, in a tiny tent. It was just for one night - a trial run for longer trips - and I loved it. I didn't see any electricity points for the tents, though there were some power points near the small cabins on the site. I just went without wifi or phone power for 36 hours, so I entertained myself by reading, walking and talking to other campers. I'd taken along my tablet computer and all my power leads, but being unable to use them was actually really refreshing!

Yes, I try not to be on my device any more than I have to when I am camping. Usually just to take a picture or check the weather. I use the Kindle app on my phone to read, so I would be out of luck if I couldn't charge though :) Glad you loved it. We used to a lot of tent camping before we moved to a travel trailer.

We used to camp in a trailer tent when I was a child. I can see the appeal of both!

My wife and I prefer it now for when the weather is messy. Plus, I am getting too old to sleep on the ground. My back would never forgive me :)

Awesome post!!! Michigan native?! Muskegon here!

All my life! I live on the other side of the state. Midland area.

Awesome! If you get to the west side let's throw Flip City!

For sure! I see there is a big motorcycle rally near you this weekend. We are camping in Cadillac right now.

Wow @bozz. Really like the photos over the water, so nice! I rarely go camping but should definitely get out in to nature and explore. Thanks for inspiring me. Keep up the good work.

It is really fun. When I was a kid we used to take day trips and go to a State park and just spend the day there. We would take a picnic lunch and then drive home at the end of the day. It was a lot of fun and a great alternative if you don't want to go full-on camping.

I love that final picture, so blue! but with a dab of sunset... great photography.

Thanks! That last picture I used the filter for Tungsten lighting in the phone just to see what it would do. I was really surprised when it came out that way. I know it wasn't the intended use, but I wanted to give it a try anyway.

Your leaky trailer reminds me of the worst camping trip I had ever been on. It was a trip with a bunch of people from high school and we all had tents set up around the campsite. It was the first and last time I ever used one of those one person triangular tents. At some point during the night, it started to rain and it rained hard. I was woken up when the entire tent fell in on me and I was in a huge puddle. I was so wet. I spent the rest of the night sleeping in my car. If we hadn't been drinking I would have gone my ass home. LOL

Haha, that is pretty funny. Our friends we camp with used to put a tent up on our site before they bought their own trailer. They had that happen one time too. The tent didn't fall down, but they were in a bit of a depression and didn't realize it. It wasn't until the lower area filled with water and came into their tent that they realized it!

Looks like a really nice place to camp, there aren't too many camping sites out in the forest here. Does everybody camp with a trailer or RV? Or do some people also camp out with tents?

There are lots of people that camp with tents. The two sites across the road from us were both occupied by tent campers.

That looks like an awesome spot to go camping @bozz prefer the first 3 across the water photography.

Thank you!

Awwww this is so good! Sharing this makes us feel we are also with you. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you!

Just plain cool, no other words, and I know what you mean about a child getting over-excited, the fireworks of enthusiasm.
Look at that tent!!
Stay safe and enjoy your time!

Thank you!

@bozz @surpassinggoogle if you wonder who is this one who is downvoting me, it is a loser who owes me 31 sbd but refuses to pay back( the whole incident is recorded on my profile). I have been waiting for him to pay since March, he had money, but laughed me off.) Instead of being a victim I decided to burn his debt, he is revenging now.
