Bozzlife: More Holiday Traditions
I've already written some posts in the past about different traditions that my family has around the holidays. Most of them not surprisingly revolve around food. There is one more thing that @mrsbozz and I make every holiday season besides cereal mix and cookie press cookies.
Before I get to that, I am going to talk about breakfast for a little bit.
For the past several years, my brothers in-law on my wife's side of the family and I have been going out to breakfast on Christmas Eve morning. In the past, we used to go to a place called Rudy's Red Lion Diner. It was fantastic and they served you huge portions for a really great price.
Sadly, that place has closed down and now in its place is a cannabis distribution center. That meant that we needed to find a new place to get breakfast. We do have a couple Bob Evan's, an IHOP, and a Denny's in the area, but we prefer to go to local establishments as opposed to chains.
I was trying to find places for us to go and when I mentioned The Boulevard, my youngest brother in law immediately said "ooh, that's where we are going".
In my younger years, I used to spend quite a bit of time at "The Bully". It was always on a Friday night or during lunch, I had never been there for breakfast. My brother in law's favorite meal of the day is breakfast so if he said we needed to go to The Bully, then I would definitely take his opinion as gold.
There were four of us total, my brother in law from farther south couldn't make it. My father in law got the 3 eggs, meat, potatoes, and toast breakfast along with my youngest brother in law. As you can see in the opening picture, my brother in law added a short stack of pancakes to his order. The pancakes were as big around as the whole plate!
In the picture above you can see what I got. It was the farmers omelette with hashbrowns and sourdough toast. My oldest brother in law got the meat lovers omelette but instead of toast he asked for pancakes. It was a ton of food for less than $10 so I can't really complain. I don't feel it was quite as good as Rudy J's used to be, but it was still really decent and I wouldn't be surprised if we headed back there next Christmas Eve for breakfast.
Being honest, our waitress wasn't the greatest, but it could have just been an off day. They were extremely busy for a holiday morning. We had a good time talking during the slow service.
Besides having a big breakfast on Christmas Eve, it is also the day that @mrsbozz's family celebrates Christmas. The evening of Christmas Eve, we always get together and indulge in a lot of appetizers and open presents.
It never fails that I am asked to make my sausage cheese balls. This is a very 70's recipe that I picked up from a time before I knew my wife. It is pretty simple to throw together, but I hate making them because of how messy they can be.
I am going to share the basic recipe, but I actually cut it in half for the batch you see pictured above.
Here you go:
- 2 lbs of ground breakfast sausage, whatever brand you prefer
- 16 oz sharp cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup finely diced celery
- 1/2 cup finely diced onion
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1 and 1/2 cups Bisquick
Basically, you just mix it all together then roll them into little balls about an inch or so in diameter. I put them on a baking sheet with parchment paper to make clean up really easy. Next, I cover them with plastic wrap and put them in the fridge overnight.
You could probably bake them right away, but in the past my mom has tried to make them and using the same recipe she said hers didn't taste as good as mine. We determined the only thing I did differently was putting them in the fridge overnight.
When you are ready, you simply bake them in the oven at about 350 degrees for twenty minutes or so.
This is what they look like when they are finished. They are so rich and savory, everyone really loves them. Because of all the other food we had this year, a half batch was the perfect amount. I just leave them in a crock pot on warm and people can pick them out with cocktail sticks (toothpicks).
In addition to the sausage balls on the plate here you can see what we call onion puffs (basically just onions, and mayo toasted on little bread slices), and baco-nuts (water chestnuts wrapped in bacon and dipped in a ketchup sauce). All of my favorite things!
All pictures were taken by me.
Why am I suddenly feeling hungry LOL
Those meatballs sound and look so good
They really are pretty great. You should try them sometime. Best advice is to make them for a function. Then you can have a couple and let everyone else eat the rest since they probably aren't the best for anyone's waistline!
Thats a good idea to make them for a function they do look hard to resist lOL
I've been away from the USA for almost 10 years but somehow this post reminds me of being back home a bit.
Hopefully that is a good thing! Glad I could help out. All we need now is a little snow!
I can remember a similar sausage bites thing, but, the ingredients are probably (or maybe not) different!
My grandmother had something like it and other yummy things for Christmas get-togethers! One can easily overindulge in something like this, so yes! The function is perfect!
Happy New Year to you and Mrs. Bozz!

It is amazing how much people love these things. They are just a fantastic savory bomb.
Truth. Once you have them, you are hooked! Simple things for us simple people.
