SUMMER ADVENTURES - Episode 32 - A VERY GROUNDED COMMUNITY : part 2

in #steemstem5 years ago (edited)

... two bugs ...

... of this very common species ...

... are approaching each other ...

... this is the overture to mating ...

... one of the many ...

... slugs ... is slowly crawling ...

... in search of soft young sprouts ...

... these larvae prefer large leaves ...

... some plants ...

... are covered with them ...

... this cricket is peeking from his burrow ...  I was observing him for a half an hour, he was appearing from time to time and was looking all around the entrance ... when seen from high above, our usual human position, the insects look very different than when you are on their level ... when seen from the ground  level and up close this cricket looked much more like a prairie dog or a meerkat then the usual idea of a repulsive crawling creature ....

... I already put a solid number of caterpillars ...

... especially of this inchworm kind ... in yesterday's post ...

... but they are so numerous and varied ...

... and there are always new moments and new ways to organize the composition of the shot ... so I just had to put a few more here ...

... at least these black ones are a bit different ...

... and meanwhile ...

... the slug ...

... has found the appropriate vegetable ...

... and now ...

... is slowly eating ...

... and so are ...

... these similarly colored caterpillars ...

... and we'll take a few steps around ...

... to see ...

... what else can we find ...

... this very interesting larvae ad example ... this was the first time I saw it ... it has a shell ... that looks like made of mud ... but looks also a bit like some seed pod or something similar ... maybe the shell is a dried out plant part ... I'm not sure ... and is hard to find information about something like this on the internet when you have no idea about the species...

... the head of this larvae looked in some way strangely similar to those covers of the sea snails with which they can close their shells very tight ... looked exactly like the perfectly sized and shaped ... and pretty thick and strong ... cover for that entrance ...

... and here is a short look at the way the larvae moves ...

... you can often come across the molehills on these fields ...

... small lizards like to sleep and bask in the sun ...

... on these little platforms ... it's a great place to be exposed to the sun for an optimal body temperature regulation ... and for a change have a clear view of the surroundings ... in the dense and intricate vegetation on the ground level, the visibility is very different ...

... nearby ... the female of this big grasshopper species ...

... is laying the eggs in the ground ...

... and these ...

... even bigger grasshoppers ...

... that I introduced yesterday ... are crawling and jumping all over the place ... they were very numerous this year ...

... meanwhile ...

... the slugs are slowly ...

... eating young plants ...

... some of the shiny little beetles ...

... I already showed you yesterday ... are mating ...

... and so are these ...

... minuscule ... and very beautifully colored ...

... jumping beetles ... I don't know their real name, I just call them jumping beetles because they can do incredibly long jumps... pretty similar to those of the fleas ...

... sometimes after the short summer rain ...

... tiny mushrooms can appear on the scene ...

... they don't last long in these summer conditions...

... the earthworms ...

... also come on the surface ...

... and some of them ... sometimes ...

... get kind of stranded here ...

... caught by the sudden appearance of the strong summer sun ...

... and became a great catch ...

... for the black ants ...

... who are always patrolling the fields and small dusty roads between them ...

... a minuscule flower for a change ... to shake a bit the monotony of earthy colors ...

... and a bigger, mallow flower ...

... with the colorful bug on it ...

... many small moths ...

... are hidden on and under these plants ...

... waiting for the twilight ...

... some of them are very elegant ...

... and this, very beautiful one ...

... has an interesting fallen leaf camouflage with folded wings ...

... a small fly ...

... is feeding ...

... on the dead caterpillar ...

... this black ground beetle is a fast and aggressive predator ...

... one of the many small cricket species present in these fields  ...

... a beetle of the Curculionidae family ... I don't know the exact species ... and now ...

... with this Daddy Long Legg ...

... and the picture of the young version of the bugs from the beginning of today's post ... is time to end this two-part photo reportage about these coastal fields and the community of plants and animals that are living there during the summer ... THE END.

... as always in these posts on Steemit, the photographs ... and GIFs made from some of these photographs ... are my work ...

:) thanks

Wow those lizards sure like to pose for you. That slug reminds me of the spice worms from the movie dune.

True :) these slugs are pretty long when they stretch.

I enjoyed your up close and person view of other creatures we share the earth with. It's easy to think they don't count but you made them real and matter. Loved it.

Thank you :) glad you liked it.

Borjan, do you need any my comments?
you know better how amazing is this stuff.
no, really. just tell me how many hours you spent harvesting this?
it cant be result of one evening, or day, can it be so ?!
amazing simply amazing.. where are these damn silly whales... @curie, @c-squad... are they sleeping or what?!

There was a lot of work ... not many days ... maybe three or four at the beginning of September... but I was staying in these fields the whole day ... it is easy to find interesting insects and situations because the place is teeming with life :D but to take a shot ... is difficult ... a lot of waiting and a lot of crawling ... but is fun ... theoretically, you could do these shots in one evening really, in the sense that you can come across almost all these species and situations in a few hours walk if you are concentrated on what's happening in these macro world ... but then in practice ... there is not always the opportunity for a good shot ...

oh. understandable.

Amazing you were able to
Capture such close up pictures of these insects/ creatures.
