Steemit Sign Up Officially Re-Opened!
Yes! You heard correctly, the time has finally come for steemit to reopen it's doors to the public!!
So Big Update!
Right after posting this... this happens... Pretty awesome!
I'm happy to announce that Steemit has re-enabled account registration for new users, as of today.
Over the past week our team has successfully recovered the vast majority of compromised accounts to their original owners, including over 80% of all accounts secured by Steemit through the recent hard fork. Our support team is working around the clock in efforts to recover remaining accounts.
We have updated our password policy in an effort to reduce the likelihood of future incidents. All new accounts, password changes, and account recovery actions will require the use of a password randomly generated by your browser.
If you have not updated your password to a randomly generated password, then we recommend you change your password immediately.

Membership to Steemit.com is now under invitation only because of unexpectedly high sign up rate. Submit your email to get on the waiting list.
How does one get invited to steem exactly?

You can always mine new accounts for your friends :) An average pc can probably mine a new account in one day.

If you check out this page: https://steemit.com/steemhelp/@joseph/mining-steem-for-dummies it will give a good guide to mining (there is probably a different guide out there if you are using windows). Basically you just choose an account that doesn't exist, and as soon as your miner finds a proof of work, the account is automatically created.
I dont think you have to mine, i suspect you can just create new accounts with the CLI, you just have pay a fee (which is the starting steem power, i think)

It is in beta. I suspect they like the size of the pool of people we have here at the moment to test out some changes. The crowd here is pretty intelligent. Yet we are complaining about various things, and some aspects like the trending page are kind of useless for the most part. That is with what 30,000 or so people? (not all active) We also have good posts being lost in the flood of posts and it is difficult to find them.
The more people on the platform they have the worse all of that will be. My opinion is that they are likely doing this so they have something more reasonable to work with to try and find improvements to these things.
I could be totally wrong... I am completely guessing.
I think you are correct
Imagine the reviews and feedback they might get if they didn't address this and that 30,000 people suddenly became 300,000. It might be pretty bad.

Where is this you speak of? I don't think your correct on that one
a friend of me just sign in on facebook with steemit.
It's not us that can invite other users. It's guys who own steem will invite whoever subscribes with the email will get the notification when their turn comes. Hope this helps
it looks like they actually have reopened registration... unless theres something im missing
I have been trying to join with no luck but managed today as opened up registration again.
