If you like to write, and haven't tried this 3 prompt challenge, you are missing out on a fun exercise. Here's the explanation by Weekend Freewrite creator @mariannewest:

This is how the weekend free write is different. You get 3 prompts and write 5 minutes on each prompt creating one story. Each prompt is in a separate post. No peeking!! The First Sentence prompt will always have the green graphic.

The second prompt is- The interference. It will direct your story into a new direction. Write for 5 more minutes. The second prompt will always have this graphic with a yellow background.

The third part is a dramatic twist. Continue writing where that prompt takes you but still creating one story. Write 5 more minutes.

If you want to give this contest a try - STOP HERE and don't read anyone else's story yet. The idea is to be surprised by each new prompt and then have to incorporate it into the story you have already started!

Here is my entry, and the prompts used are in bold print:

Unsung Hero

Sitting under the barely flowering rosebush, she listens to the endless conversations these women were having on their phones. An entire row of scantily clad females exposing their bodies to the hot sun, smeared with all manner of sweet-smelling lotions. The conversation buzzes around her as the women chatter mindlessly into their devices and ignore each other.

She ponders the truth of what she sees before her. No wonder the human race was failing. They maintain no real connection or purpose. Her own hive, for example, would never squander away this time in complete disregard of their duties. None of these women have the good sense to band together and accomplish things for the common good. She lifts off the ground and rises to alight on one of the budding roses. She crawls deep into the bud to inhale the sweet nectar and gather it to herself.

The girls smiled at him and acted all nice when the good looking man sauntered up and surveyed the row of flesh displayed before him. Deep within the rosebud, she feels the presence of evil. It triggers an automatic response in her, sending out a signal of possible danger to her fellow workers. A ripple runs through the hive community as each receives the signal.

She crawls out of the bud and lifts herself into the air to survey the scene and try to pinpoint the danger. She immediately notices the male standing before all the girls and feels the menace radiating from him, even though he’s smiling at them. She hears the false tones in his voice as he greets them jovially. Something is very wrong here and these chattering girls can only see the image he is projecting to them. Feeling that something should be done to show his true colors, she flies right at his face and bumps against his temple.

The sting causes the man to go into immediate anaphylactic shock and he hits the pool deck with a thud. 911 is called but the paramedics arrive too late to save him. The police arrive and as they search for some identification they find the lost credit card. It shows the name of Stephanie Miller on its bright silver face. The same Stephanie Miller who was murdered in her room just two days ago. There would need to be further investigation to tie this young man to the murder but this was strong evidence that he is the man they are looking for. Stephanie had been last seen leaving a pool deck with a tall handsome young man matching this description. Had he come here today in search of his next victim?

She dies in her attack on the evil man, but she lives on in the hive consciousness. The girls around the pool have been saved, but they will never know their hero.
