Turn signals and reality checks don't mix.
I was walking down a new path that I had just recently discovered. It wasn't brand new, but it was a single forgotten path that lead to who knows what. So I took it upon myself to complete the fading journey that someone else had begun and who knows if ever got to finish it.
Now I, being not a total moron, decided to first explore the path and gain as much knowledge about it as possible before getting lost into it. Very smart, indeed. Pat on the shoulder, Blind. I go through it little by little, inch by inch, very patiently. I study it until it is as familiar to me as is how my name should be pronounced. I make sure that there is nothing else to learn and there isn't a single spot I haven't gone through. I am a confident traveller and a well versed guide of the path.
I begin my descent into the path hoping to discover something to reward my toil and patience. I am looking forward to being amazed and captivated by something at the end of the path. I have worked hard to make sure this path doesn't feel useless and without a purpose. I walk through it with a pompous smile and a heap of mighty valor in my heart. I make it to the end of the path and I turn around to bid one final farewell to the path filled with annoying vines, tricky trees and a painful rocky floor. Goodbye struggle, hello success.
I turn around and cut through the final branch between me and everything.
Out there stood a man, looking at me but looking through my soul. He stared at me but didn't look at me. He knew I existed but I didn't to him. His face full of scars and hands as hard as steel. His eyes carried miles of tales and his aura was bright. "There are seven million paths like that, boy, all lead to me." A smirk on his face that only shattered me from within. "And I created every one of them." He knew the number of steps I had taken and the number of cracks in each stone on that floor. He knew the number of breaths I took to get here and the number of flies that nested in that path. He knew it all. For all seven million paths. This was a reality check.
Had I not come here I wouldn't have known what it really takes. Had I not heard his voice I wouldn't have known that there's so much more. It's never enough. You haven't done enough. There's someone who knows more, worked more, done more and is more. How dare you think you would conquer what he is after. There's always more to do and learn, more to become. No matter whoch turn signal you select, no matter where you intend to go, you will stay put unless you hit a reality check.
You have to get better. You must, if you want to reach your goal.
