Rhinos at Kruger National Park, South Africa.
Out of all the animals I witnessed in South Africa, Rhinos were the most surreal. They just didn't look possible. Here was an animal that looked so different to anything I had ever seen. I felt as if any minute the head would pop off and out would jump a couple of people, and shout "GOT YA!". Add to this their elusive nature and I found myself falling in love with this fascinating and totally bizarre looking creature.
2 White Rhinos
We came across 3 rhinos near the edge of a track in Kruger early one morning, so we sat patiently watching them. This was as close as i had been to these mythical beasts, usually just catching a glimpse of them on a faraway ridge somewhere. There were 3 rhinos and we had ahppened into the middle of some type of dispute. Two of the rhinos had faced off towards each other, and were spraying (urine) from their rear, and huffing and stomping, while the 3rd Rhino stood a short distance away. I wasn't sure exactly what to expect next, were they going to charge each other or had I watched too many Hollywood movies. Regardless, these creatures were almost as big as our car, they were agitated and we were in close proximity, though they seemed oblivious to our presence. After some more spraying, huffing and squirting, one of the Rhinos turned and clumped off through the undergrowth. The 2 that were left then calmy went about having a morning feed on the grass.
Morning Feed Time
The pictures here are the calm after the storm as the 2 remaining Rhinos go about their day, I was too transfixed on what was happening to take any pictures earlier. Regardless, they were graceful, intriguing and majestic creatures. How anybody could every want to kill one for their horns is beyond my comprehension.
