An Alaska Dog-Sledding Tour is A Once In a Lifetime Experience !
One of the things that we wanted to do while in Alaska was to visit a dog-camp and go sledding with them through the snow. Thankfully, while staying at the Knik River Lodge we got the opportunity to do it.
The dog sled camp spends the summer months on a snow field high atop a mountain glacier. We took about a 20 minute helicopter ride from our base to get there. I wrote a short steemit piece complete with pics about our GLACIER HELICOPTER TRIP
Once we arrived at the dog camp we were introduced to the handlers or "Mushers" as they are know and got to meet and play with a few of the dogs. Contrary to what I had been led to believe the dogs were not at all vicious and were happy to be petted and rubbed.
The excitement of the dogs grew as they knew they were going for a run and it reminded me of how my Rottweiler would react whenever I got his lead to take him for a walk. The dogs were hitched up and rearing to go.
The dogs and the Musher were professional Iditarod runners, and this was their training in the off-season. We ran across the top of the snow-field with the blue sky above us and the cold wind on our face. The sled moved smoothly as the dogs all pulled in unison, only ocassionally nipping at each others heals for fun.
After a large circuit of about 20-30 minutes on the snowfield we headed back to camp. It really was a wonderful experience.
TIP: Don't eat the yellow snow :)

They are husky-mixed breed

Beautiful post indeed @bkkshadow ! I had a french friend who did this and had his own team and sled and was regurally entering world compettions where these wonderful dogs run their little hearts out through the white crisp snow !1 So great the photos, liked especially the portraits you made of these dogs before their little home of recuperation !!

Well as I recall it was in Canada, somehwere in Quebec !! I am no longer in contact with him as I no longer live in France ! But I am sure you can find some contqacts on the net aqnd even see some great films on this very subject on Youtube!! These dogs are amazing eh ?

I did not know you could do this, so awesome!!! I have never traveled to Alaska but I do have a cousin that lives in the town of Homer. She likes it and say the summer when there is tons of sunlight, there is tons of work with the fishing industry. That's when her family makes the majority of their money for the year. It's really a different way of life up there. Looks like you had a blas, thanks for sharing your experience with us.
I have a Malamute dog , it’s one of the best dog breed , very friendly with everybody and always welcoming any one come to our home, like the the experience what you have and I wish to do the same in the future
WOW...beautiful white snow and blue skies didn't realize there were some many color breed of husky dogs that look awesome. What a buzz that would of been flying along that great white field of snow. Great photos is on my bucket list. Have Resteemed your post and Upvoted you.
