Greetings from the Bird Nest my friends!

I hope you all are enjoying a restful weekend. It has been a sunny and warm day today, a perfect day to talk about Ginger Ale! Making this fizzy drink at home will cost pennies compared to the cost at the market.

And it’s healthy!

Ginger is so good for you! It's been valued for many years for both medicinal and culinary qualities. it is used to help treat nausea, fight the common cold and flu. It also has very powerful antioxidant qualities. For those of you who fight chronic indigestion, ginger to the rescue. I always wondered why my mother gave me ginger ale when I was sick.

Yesterday I shared about making the starter culture for making healthy Soda! Ginger Bug! Using the Ginger Bug culture will allow you to make Fruit Sodas, Ginger Ale and Root Beer!

Our Ginger Bug is ready, now let’s make Ginger Ale!

We begin with strained Ginger Bug

Ginger Ale

  • 1/2 Gallon Ball Jar
  • Coconut Palm Sugar or Cane Sugar (3/4 cup)
  • Fresh Ginger (1/4 cup firmly packed)
  • Fresh Lemon Juice (1 tbsp.)
  • Ginger Bug (1/2 cup)
  • Filtered Water (1 qt)

It’s as Simple as…

bringing the water and minced garlic to a boil in your favorite saucepan. Reduce the heat and simmer everything for 30 minutes.

Sugar will be next…

into the pan, stirring until it is dissolved. Now we add the fresh lemon juice and stir. Set everything aside to cool for a couple of hours. You don’t want to add the Ginger Bug too soon or it will kill the culture. Is it cool? Okay, stir in the Strained Ginger Bug and pour all into your Jar. Add enough filtered water to leave a couple of inches at the top of the jar. Stir vigorously with a wooden spoon and cover with cheese cloth and rubber band. Stir vigorously to form a whirlpool morning and night for the next 7-10 days.

You’ll know it’s ready when…

it fizzes and bubbles like crazy! By day three the sweet taste will have dissipated, consumed by the culture. Time to strain and bottle your Ginger Ale! I use swing top bottles, they're easy to clean, re-usable and seal well! Oh, Don’t drink it yet! Refrigerate your Ginger Ale for a few days.

You can add fruit juice to your fizzy drink, today I juiced an orange to make a refreshing orange soda for Mr. Bird!

What a refreshing way to end the day!

I really want to make this, looks super refreshing! I tried making ginger beer many years ago just after we married, but I used fresh yeast and silly me used screw top bottles! Mom came to visit, took one look at this stuff bubbling away, took it outside and slowly started unscrewing the bottles. Of course I lost the whole batch as it all shot out, my whole kitchen would have been soaked, would certainly have hit the ceiling! I was so disappointed and got such a fright, I never tried again. But I will try your method now, looks so delicious and cooling.

Oh my goodness....I have to say the first time I made it I had hubby take the swing top off as I was so afraid that would happen to me! I can just see it flying out of the bottle everywhere, yikes! What a mess right? It was okay though just a nice pop :) It is so fun to add different juices to the fizzy drink, It's so refreshing, I know you would like it right about now in your hot summer climate. I hope you'll let me know when you make it, share what you pair with it. You're so creative it will be fun to hear :) Have a wonderful Sunday my friend. Thank you for your sweet encouragement!

I have my granny's recipe somewhere, should have used cork tops rather! Will let you know when I make it :)

This has to be my all time favorite of yours :) , to be able t make my own ginger ale,. brilliant, Have set myself a reminder for about 3 weeks time when I will hopefully have a free weekend and time to try making the bug then the ale :)

Yay!!! I really hope you do! I'm starting another batch today, it is so refreshing, we both love it. It is so versatile you the combinations are endless. I look forward to hearing what you think. Truly appreciate your support and kind words my friend :) I love sharing with everyone!

You know, I tried making a ginger bug a long time ago. It did okay for a while, and then slowly died. My kefir grains did the same thing, just slowly died over a period of weeks...
I started making kombucha, and I am happy to say it works great for me! Been brewing it for years now. I just wonder why the other things died.

Your ginger ale looks delicious!!
