Cycling through Japan: Yokohama, Kamakura and Hakone #bikeitjohn
This post marks the beginning of a series of a world traveler who quit his job to find new purpose in life.
After a three months travel initiation in China, I flew to Tokyo, Japan, and discovered that the world is much more different than I thought it was. I met people who traveled on a bike from Portugal to Japan, people who founded their guesthouse business after traveling on foot through the world, girls who quit their job to come to Japan, boys who gave up their life at home to discover humanity’s boundary.
I got so inspired by all those events that I also decided to take a bike and cycle through the freaking entire globe. I started my journey in Japan and cycled through Yokohama, Kamakura, Hakone all the way down to Osaka. Along the way I made YouTube videos. Check out my YouTube channel. But now I wish to also put my content on d.tube to broaden my audience and inspire more people along the way.
This video is about my first ever vlog that I did. I took it with my GoPro Session camera, which was mounted on my bike helmet at that time. My setup was very rudimentary so please do apologise for this very first trial. From that time onward, I have been fascinated by vlogging. There was one day, I actually made 16 videos in 10 hours straight. It was my most productive day as vlogger for sure.
What I can take from this video’s experience is that Japan is a wonderful country and possibly one of the finest to go to as traveler. I heard from locals that they usually are very stressed out due to high demand at their work and long hours coupled with high living expenses. I would say that if you live in Tokyo, you can expect to spend pretty much the same amount as if you live in London or Hong Kong.
The way I survived there for four months is to volunteer for a hostel in Yokohama, Chinatown, called Chillulu. They let me stay for free for a few months in exchange for part-time work at their hostel and cafe. I still spent about 1000 EUR per month due to traveling at that time. But imagine the expenses if I had to pay for food and rent. So, a great tip is to volunteer in exchange for rent and food.
Then you can use the Working Holiday Visa, which is available for many European citizens, to stay in Japan for one year with the right to work for any company as an employee. Go for roles such as waiter, hostel worker, chef or anything that has to do with hospitality since this is an industry that is, in 2017-2018 at least, lacking in working force. Japan also recently opened up its borders to foreign workers with changes in immigration law making new categories of visa.
Along the way I met an extraordinary person: Matt Galat, the guy from Jayoe Nation
We met on a camping site in the middle of the night in Hakone and we traveled since then for a couple of days together until we reached Kyoto. He also featured me in one of his YouTube videos. Take a look at his channel, it is full of inspiration. He has a plan to cycle through the world in 10 years and literally goes to Antarctica and the most dangerous and interesting places of the world. He also climbed the Mount Everest and traveled to more countries that I thought possible. He taught me how to do YouTube videos and now I have been producing videos for four months.
Please enjoy the ride, quite literally, and let me know if you wish to know more about Japanese culture and how to travel there. Please up-vote if you like this post and vlog, please comment if you wish to engage with me.
Thank you!
