A Most Violent Year (2014) - Bezil's Review
It's nice when a movie does slight better when you least expect it. Although, not too gory for such a movie tittled ''A Most Violent Year'', but as senseless as ever, this movie directed by J.C. Chandor has provided at least the right amount of suspense for any crime movie lovers.
Movie: A Most Violent Year (2014)
Genre: Crime, Action, and Drama
Director: J. C. Chandor
Cast: stars Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain with Alessandro Nivola, David Oyelowo, Albert Brooks, and Catalina Sandino Moreno.
Synopsis: In New York City 1981, an ambitious immigrant fights to protect his business and family during the most dangerous year in the city's history.
Review: The plot is pretty thin, without much of a twist or turn. The pace is slow! Although there are few suspense here and there, but still its slow and flat all the way down.
The movie is all about a man of principles (Abel Morales), the son of a Latino migrant, who is determined to make a clean sweep of his unglamorous past(Even illegal), and to keep his hands clean when it comes to managing his business. It is not even violent armed attacks on his trucks loaded with precious black gold that would make him bow to violence. He stays right. Not easy in this New York in the early 80s where violence and corruption explode. Everyone wants guns to protect themselves, even without a license. His wife, the daughter of a great local gangster, quickly finds that these principles are those of a wuss. But Abel stood firm on his principles and believed thats what distinguishes him from his rogue competitors and on the other hand, which will allow him to secure financial independence for himself.
Abel contrasts so much with his environment and his entourage that i constantly wonders if he will succeed in keeping his principles. Watching the movie, i sometimes dont know if the film tells the story of an honorable businessman constantly resisting the temptation to become the product of his environment by pure morals or if it is not actually a clever ruffian pulling the strings of success by pretending to be what he is not. In addition to a real suspense emanating from the empathy that one feels towards the couple, which is one of the main elements that made the suspense more worthy in the two hours of the film. However, In this respect, the final scenes surely does guide the viewers with absolute finesse.
